Synopsis (short abstract) The Land Cover Atlas of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan was initially prepared in the framework of the FA O Government Cooperative Programme under the auspices of the project on “Strengthening Agricultural Economics, Market Information and Statistics Services”. The project was formulated upon the request from the Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan and funded by the European Commission. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FA O) provided technical assist ance as the executing agency in close cooperation with all parties.

    This Atlas provides policy and strategic guidance to the rural sector on food security, which directly contributes to the overall objective of strengthening agricultural information and statistics services in the country. It includes an introduction text and the complete land cover mapping of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, organized in 34 Provinces and 5 Basins. Data tables and maps for each one of these districts.

    The Lesotho Land Cover Database (LCDB) and ATLAS have been prepared in the framework of the FAO Emergency Program (OSRO/LES/401/EC): “Building Lesotho resilience through the upscale of Climate Smart Agriculture and functional DRR Land Resources Information”. The LCDB was developed in close collaboration with Lesotho Governmental Institutions including: Bureau of the Statistics (BOS), Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (MAFS), Ministry of Forestry, Range and Soil Conservation (MFRSC). The Lesotho Government supported the development of the Land Cover database providing valuable analogic and digital information. The very high resolution true color Ortho-photos of 2014 and 2004 that were provided by the Bureau of the Statistics (BOS) played a decisive role on the development of the database ensuring a very high and detailed quality and accuracy of the product. Furthermore, the Lesotho Government through, the Bureau of the Statistics and the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security , supported the field survey activities, development of the land cover classification legend and validation of the LCDB with skilled experts that provided important inputs for a reliable and accurate land cover database. The Land Cover Atlas of the Lesotho provides information on the land cover distribution by Administrative boundaries and River catchment areas. The administrative unit layer as well as the water basin layer and a number of ancillary datasets are provided by the Ministry of Fores try, Range and Soil Conservation (MFRSC), Ministry of Local Government and Chieftainship Affairs (MLGCA), Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (MAFS), Ministry of Tourism, Environment and Culture (MTEC), Ministry of Water Affairs (MWA) and Lesotho Land Administration Authority (LAA).

    The Afghanistan Soil Information System (AfSIS) project, funded by FAO core budget, has completed soil surveys, analyzed soil samples, and mapped soil in nine provinces of Afghanistan. This Afghanistan Soil Atlas is the culmination of this work. This Atlas details soil properties, soil types, key nutrients in soil, and threats to agriculture from degraded soil in nine provinces, as well as selected national soil maps. This Atlas will help policymakers and land users better plan crop plantations, target irrigation designs, and create better climate change mitigation, and natural resource management strategies. The project data and methodology was comprised of field soil profile studies, laboratory soil analyses, and geo-data information. Soil profile site selection considered natural factors influencing soil formation, total land area, and available financial resources. The locations of soil profile sites were preloaded into GPS-enabled mobile or tablet application in order to guide the surveyors to the exact point in the field. During fieldwork, the selected soil profiles including 2-3 soil surface samples were studied according to the FAO Soil Profile description standards. Soil laboratory analysis methods were mostly those, which are favorable for arid and semi-arid region. The new national soil maps created from this data are on 1:200,000 scale, while provincial-level maps are on 1:50,000 scale.
