Synopsis (short abstract) This flyer summarizes key activities and achievements of project GCP/INT/748/ITA “Multi-stakeholder initiative for Sustainable Food Systems in the Mediterranean” (SFS-MED) in Albania. Funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Italy and implemented by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in Albania, Jordan, and Morocco, the project was backstopped by the Agrifood Systems and Food Safety Division (ESF). In Albania, the FAO country office supported agrifood systems transformation by facilitating participatory multi-stakeholder policy-making processes through national and sub-national dialogues. This collaborative approach led to the development of a cohesive national roadmap by the Government, national partners, and agrifood systems stakeholders. Agritourism was identified as a key driver for transformation, resulting in capacity-building activities for stakeholders, including farmers and agritourism units, to adopt agroecological farming approaches, establish stronger market linkages, and raise awareness about healthy diets and local agrobiodiversity among consumers, tourists, and school children. The solutions facilitated by the project led to multiple positive outcomes for Albania’s agrifood systems, including increased rural incomes, enhanced employment opportunities, and the promotion of healthy diets that conserve biodiversity and protect the environment.

    The reader will be able to know more about this initiative in Jordan, where its ultimate goal is to improve food security, incomes and nutritional status of the population, as well as environmental sustainability in the Mediterranean countries, through the development of more inclusive, efficient and sustainable food systems. In doing so, the project aims at developing a global systemic SFS approach, which could be replicated and have similar impacts in other countries/regions. the project will deliver a joint framework developed, built on context-specific solutions hinged on science, knowledge and experience, and innovative pathways for the shift towards sustainable food systems, improve evidence and knowledge base of the dimensions of food systems’ sustainability across the Mediterranean, and develop investment proposals and financial options. FAO has strategically partnered with the International Centre for Advanced Mediterranean Agronomic Studies and Union for the Mediterranean for a tripartite collaboration that brings together and capitalizes on each organization’s mandate (scientific, technical, political), and comparative advantages, reflecting the holistic dimension of sustainability.     Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 12.3 of the UN 2030 Agenda calls for halving per capita global food waste (FW) from retail to households. Food waste (FW) prevention and reduction play a major role in ensuring the sustainability of food systems as well as effective Solid Waste Management (SWM). A coherent, coordinated, and complementary approach to quantification causes identification, and scaling up feasible solutions is necessary. Awareness-raising and capacity development for food supply chain actors, the public sector, and civil society organizations is required for successful interventions. The Project Innovative approaches to reduce, recycle and reuse FW in urban Sri Lanka was implemented under the oversight of the Ministry of Urban Development, and Housing in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the International Water Management Institute (IWMI) from June 2019 to August 2021. The project produced a series of reports and papers including FAO and IWMI (2021a), FAO and IWMI (2021b), FAO and IWMI (2021c), and FAO and IWMI (2021d) that were used in the awareness creation and capacity development programmes. The major output of the Project was to facilitate knowledge development for and drafting of the Urban Roadmap on FW Prevention, Reduction, Management in Sri Lanka, that includes a comprehensive Action Plan with Monitoring and Evaluation criteria. The objective of this report is to summarize the proceedings of the consultations and sensitization sessions conducted from June 2019 to June 2021.
