In Benin, a West African country, there is comprehensive legislation that addresses key components of the seed sector. However, the country still has key bottlenecks that hinder the development of a vibrant seed system. These include the low investment of public and private sectors in the seed sector, the lack of knowledge of the seed regulation by seed sector actors, the non-optimal functioning of the National plant seed committee, especially for the release of plant varieties, the inability of agricultural research to ensure sufficient availability of breeder seed and poor non-existent infrastructures for seed quality assurance, and the high rate of non-certified seeds in local and national markets. Interventions were proposed to serve as entry points for the discussion at the national level for the development of a functional, and vibrant seed sector in Benin.

This Data in Emergencies Monitoring (DIEM-Monitoring) brief shares the results of a eleventh-round assessment conducted in January and February 2024 in Sierra Leone. It presents key findings and recommendations for humanitarian actors to utilize in planning and implementing data-driven programming to sustain farmers’ livelihoods and build their resilience to future shocks – protecting the food security of rural people in Sierra Leone.  The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) established the DIEM-Monitoring System to collect, analyse and disseminate data on shocks and livelihoods in countries prone to multiple shocks. DIEM-Monitoring aims to inform decision-making by providing regularly updated information on how different shocks are affecting the livelihoods and food security of agricultural populations. Information is collected from primary sources in the production process: producers, traders or marketers, input suppliers, extension officers and other key informants.

The Government of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, through the Fleming Fund of the Department of Health and Social Care, contributed USD 1 187 712 to FAO’s project entitled “Governance and surveillance of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in Sierra Leone”. The project’s objective was to strengthen national capacities in AMR surveillance and governance in the animal health sector using a One Health approach in order to reduce the threat and impact of AMR. The project supported the establishment of the national technical working group on AMR, as well as the development of the National Action Plan on AMR and the National AMR Surveillance Strategy for Animal Health. The project strengthened the country’s capacity to generate the AMR data, enabled AMR information dissemination across sectors and established the foundations for AMR and antimicrobial use surveillance in the animal health sector in Sierra Leone.
