Synopsis (short abstract) Nutrition Nexus is a high-stakes, scenario-driven game that plunges players into the future of the global agrifood system. Set in the year 2045, the game challenges participants to navigate mounting crises—climate shocks, supply chain disruptions, and emerging technologies—while balancing cooperation and competition. Each player represents a key stakeholder, from policymakers and agribusiness leaders to research institutions and consumer advocates, each with their own public and hidden objectives. Through resource exchanges, crisis negotiations, and strategic alliances, players must work together to prevent system collapse while advancing their own agendas. By mirroring real-world complexities, Nutrition Nexus serves as both a thought experiment and a call to action—urging players to rethink the future of food and the collaborative pathways needed to build a more sustainable, resilient, and equitable system.

The global community has committed to responding to climate change while ensuring decent livelihoods and healthy food for everyone, keeping within planetary boundaries. Transforming agrifood systems is essential to meeting these challenges, with climate response being an intrinsic element. The need for more resilient systems that can sustain increasing demands in a setting of tightening constraints is evident. Resilience must be generated across environmental, social and economic domains, all the while maintaining the economic viability of agrifood systems to ensure that transition occurs in a just and fair manner. Climate technologies are a key enabler to support climate action and the sustainable transition of agrifood systems.The report highlights the needs for robust technology assessments to underpin climate technology identification for agrifood systems transformation that addresses all stages of agrifood value chains. This needs to be supported by capacity-building programmes, targeted financing and fed into the ongoing climate policy process. The capacity-building strategy and efforts are to be tied to the technology assessments, and identify suitable and correct skill sets, especially for smallholders and vulnerable segments of the population.

FAO’s Office of Innovation is working with CIRAD (International Cooperation Centre of Agricultural Research for Development) and other partners on an FAO initiative on foresight on pre-emerging and emerging agrifood technologies and innovations, aligned with UN 2.0 and The Future of Food and Agriculture 2022: engaging all key actors of agrifood innovation systems in the foresight on pre-emerging and emerging technologies and innovations (PETIAS) to better prepare for alternative futures, feeding it into anticipatory action, and convening the global community for constructive multilateral dialogue and knowledge exchange. The aim is to support policymakers, investors and innovation actors in their approaches and decision making.The study assesses a selection of technologies and innovations, which potentially could be of paramount importance in addressing agrifood challenges until 2050, as well as the most important trends and drivers that will influence the emergence of agrifood PETIAS and their triggers of change, including some regional aspects and stakeholders' perspectives. The goal is also to build plausible future scenarios for the evolvement of the PETIAS and innovation process governance in the future with the time horizon of 2050 to inform future-oriented policymaking.The report is built with inputs from a multistakeholder Delphi survey, online and in presence workshops with experts and stakeholders, the FAO FSN Forum, as well as regional foresight exercises (Latin America and Central Asia and Caucasus).

In recent years, global shocks such as climate events, the COVID-19 pandemic and the Ukraine crisis have significantly disrupted food systems worldwide, compounding existing stresses and challenges. In response to these disruptions, FAO has conducted a comprehensive global study that targets all food system stakeholders, including local governments.For this study, in-depth case studies were conducted in 11 cities across Asia, Africa, Europe, and Latin America to provide detailed insights into how food system actors respond to multiple shocks and stresses. Through interviews and focus groups, the case studies capture diverse perspectives and explore the complexities of building resilience in specific contexts. This publication highlights the unique approach of resilience-building efforts in Medellin, Colombia.
