Water pollution in the LitaniRiver and Lake Qaraounarea poses serious problems for human health and the surrounding environment. Pollution originating from the agricultural sector is predominantly due to runoff from excessive and indiscriminate use of fertilizers and pesticides. It is therefore crucial to promote the application of good agricultural practices (GAP) targeting the most prolific crops and farmers. This project thus sought to dispel the misconceptions surrounding reduced agrochemical use through the implementation of pilot plots and the provision of direct technical assistance to potato farmers.

Water availability in Lebanon has been hit by many critical issues, such as water resource degradation, increasing water demand, rapid urbanization and climate change. Effective and efficient water management is thus fundamental to ensuring sustainable development without jeopardizing the status of water resources. Water monitoring and accounting play a crucial role in helping water management institutions to manage complexity and to implement integrated water resources management. The aim of the project was to improve the performance and enhance the capacity of regional water management institutions, leading to more effective planning and management of water resources, and better water outcomes for end users. The project was implemented in the pilot area of Akkar and Menieh irrigation schemes in El Bared watershed, North Lebanon.
