dc.description.abstract The project focused on safeguarding the ecosystems of the Bua River and Lake Malawi, which host various fish species, including the endangered Opsaridium microlepis. By controlling the spread of EUS, the project helped preserve the health and genetic diversity of wild fish populations, crucial for the sustainability of Malawi’s aquatic resources. The project also had a significant economic impact, benefiting over 1.6 million people who depended on the fisheries sector for their livelihoods. This included not only fishers but also individuals involved in fish processing, marketing, and related activities. By managing the outbreak, the project mitigated potential income losses caused by fish stock declines, ensuring that rural communities, particularly those near lakes, maintained viable economic opportunities.
