No results found.As part of the SIDS Solutions Forum, 30-31 August 2021, FAO collected innovations and creative digital technologies that respond to local problems and challenges. This flyer presents a hot air dryer for roots and tubers. Local food losses are mainly due to poor infrastructure, power outages, extreme weather conditions, and high transport costs. Traditional processing and preservation are of limited value in extending the shelf life of food. The hot air dryer extends the shelf life of products. This technology supports farmers in fulfilling their consumption needs throughout the year, producing a surplus, and selling the extra to the market. This food processing technology has also helped extend value chains to urban centres and between islands. -

The use of digital technologies in the agriculture and fisheries sectors of the Pacific is still in its infancy. As a result, farmers in SIDS, especially those in remote locations, have difficulties accessing actors along the value chain and in international markets. This flyer presents a platform for agriculture value chain stakeholders to connect with one another, and access information as well as simple digital tools for improved farm management.

No results found.This report presents the main results derived from the analysis of the food data collected in the 2012/13 HIES to inform current patterns on food and nutrient consumption in Solomon Islands. Based on this analysis around one person out of 10 was undernourished in Solomon Islands. That is, their habitual food consumption is insufficient to provide, on average, the amount of dietary energy required to maintain a normal, active, healthy life. This result is not surprising in a country where 13% of the population is living in poverty, more than 30% of children younger than five are stunted, 41% of women are anaemic and 70% of the population do not have to access safe sanitation. In contrast, 47% of women and 30% of men are overweight or obese. Together, these patterns characterise a population experiencing a triple burden of malnutrition. To develop the policies that will be needed to guide the country through the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals, data are needed. Whenever possible, indicators are given at national level and for sub-groups of the population. -

The pathways include strengthening and connecting rural food systems, enhancing the national policy environment, and advocating for healthy food environments that are accessible, affordable, and convenient. These pathways operate on different scales, ranging from provincial to national inward and outward-looking approaches, but they are interconnected and interact in significant ways. To achieve national prosperity, it is important to prioritize rural and urban areas and establish strong connections between them. The report recognizes areas of strength that are already in place and emphasizes the need to strengthen them further to maintain their positive trajectory. -

No results found.The objective of the Assessment is to analyse the agriculture and rural sectors from a gender perspective at the macro level (policy), meso level (institutional) and micro level (community and household). The Assessment seeks to identify gender inequalities in access to critical productive resources, assets, services and opportunities. The assessment looks at the priorities, needs and constraints of both women and men in agricultural and rural communities, and the gaps that exist in responding to these issues. It also provides recommendations and guidance to promote gender sensitivity in future programmes and projects, and identifies possible partners for gender-related activities. This Assessment is also intended to raise awareness about gender issues among policy-makers, FAO officers, NGOs and community-based organizations (CBOs) in Fiji. It provides background and gender-related information, and can be used as a tool to mainstream gender perspectives in future policies, projects and programmes in ways that empower rural women.
