No results found.Brazil successfully reduced fumonisin levels in maize by implementing the Codex Code of practice for the prevention and reduction of mycotoxin contamination in cereals, resulting in significant improvements in food safety and maize export quality and value. Brazil became the third–largest producer and second–largest exporter of maize worldwide. The case study attributes this to the establishment of national maximum levels and the utilization of the code of practice to support them. -
Book (stand-alone)Technical bookWorldwide regulations for mycotoxins in food and feed in 2003 2004Since the discovery of the aflatoxins in the 1960s, regulations have been established in many countries to protect consumers from the harmful effects of mycotoxins that may contaminate foodstuffs, as well as to ensure fair practices in food trade. Various factors play a role in decision-making processes focused on setting limits for mycotoxins. The last comprehensive overview on worldwide regulations was published as the FAO Food and Nutrition Paper 64 in 1997. At that time, 77 countries had specific regulations for mycotoxins in different foods and feeds and 13 countries had general provisions, while about 50 countries did not have data available. The number of countries with specific regulations for mycotoxins has increased over the years. This reflects the general concern that governments have about the potential effects of mycotoxins on humans and animal health and their implications for trade. The present publication updates the information in the FAO Food and Nutrition Pa per 64 and describes the situation of worldwide mycotoxin regulations as of December 2003, based on an international inquiry that was carried out in 2002 and 2003.

No results found.Mycotoxins are among the most potent causes of cancer. Ingestion through the diet can pose chronic health risks for both humans and livestock. Death may occur as a result of acute poisoning. Mycotoxins are chemicals produced by fungal moulds. These moulds grow during production, harvesting and storage of grain, pulses, nuts, roots and other crops. This booklet is directed at the farm situation, providing advice that can be used to avoid mycotoxin contamination before food leaves the farm. The booklet describes what mycotoxins are, how they are produced and how to recognise signs of their presence. It provides advice to enable farmers to minimise the risk from mould contamination whilst the crop is growing, during harvest and through storage.

Climate change impacts directly agroecosystems, which in turn has a potential impact on agricultural production, which drives economic and social impacts, which impact livelihoods. In other words, impacts translate from climate to the environment, to the productive sphere, to economic and social dimensions. Therefore, ensuring food security in the face of climate change is among the most daunting challenges facing humankind. Action is urgently needed now to reduce vulnerability and increase resilience of food systems to ensure food security and good nutrition for all. -

2022This year’s report should dispel any lingering doubts that the world is moving backwards in its efforts to end hunger, food insecurity and malnutrition in all its forms. We are now only eight years away from 2030, but the distance to reach many of the SDG 2 targets is growing wider each year. There are indeed efforts to make progress towards SDG 2, yet they are proving insufficient in the face of a more challenging and uncertain context. The intensification of the major drivers behind recent food insecurity and malnutrition trends (i.e. conflict, climate extremes and economic shocks) combined with the high cost of nutritious foods and growing inequalities will continue to challenge food security and nutrition. This will be the case until agrifood systems are transformed, become more resilient and are delivering lower cost nutritious foods and affordable healthy diets for all, sustainably and inclusively.
