Land use planning for sustainable agricultural development Botswana. Technical Paper 4.
1993Also available in:
No results found. The prosperity of Botswana largely depends on its natural resources. As to the agricultural sector, poor utilization of land resources has until now resulted in low crop yields, poor livestock offtake rates, low rural household incomes and widespread degradation of soils and rangeland. Acknowledging these problems, the Botswana Government has recently adopted a series of policies to ensure that land resources are used in a sustainable manner. The Agricultural Policy Paper of 1991 stresses the ne ed for land evaluation and environmental impact studies to be integrated in land use planning procedures. To this respect a technical cooperation project was established with the fond and Agricultural Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, titled "Land Resource Assessment for Agricultural Land Use Planning". The project aimed at developing new methodologies for land evaluation and land use planning in Botswana and the present paper discusses some of its results. -
