A total of 49 sharks and 45 batoids reliably reported for the region are listed and those common in the fisheries or likely to be found through fishing operations are fully treated (44 sharks and 33 batoids). Included here are the first confirmed reports for the region of Hemigaleus microstoma, Carcharhinus dussumieri, Aetomylaeus vesp ertilio, Himantura fai, Mobula japanica and an undescribed Dasyatis sp. The guide includes a fully illustrated keys to those orders and families that occur in the region. Each species account includes: at least one annotated illustration of the species highlighting its relevant identification characters; basic information on nomenclature, synonyms and possible misidentifications; FAO, common and local names; basic information on size, habitat and biology, importance to fisheries, and distributio n. On board guide for the identification of pelagic sharks and rays. Western Indian Ocean 2015
    Also available in:
    No results found.

The present field guide is designed to assist in the identification of pelagic sharks and rays of the Western Indian Ocean that are major, moderate, or minor importance to fisheries. It encompasses the offshore, high seas portion of FAO Fishing Area 51. The Western Indian Ocean pelagic elasmobranch fauna is currently represented by thirty four shark species and seven ray species. This field guide includes full species accounts for all known species, although it is acknowledged that some vagrant species not included here may on occasion be caught. Each species is described, depicted with a colour illustration and photo, and key distinguishing features of similar-looking species occurring in the area are highlighted allowing for easy and accurate identification in the field. This field guide is intended to help fishery workers collecting catch data in the field in the identification of the sharks and rays they are likely to encounter. It is conceived to be updatable, offering the possibi lity to add additional species accounts as new information becomes available.

Restoring the Earth - The next decade
    Unasylva No. 252 - Vol. 71 2020/1
    2020
This Unasylva issue aims at showcasing forest and landscape restoration (FLR) opportunities and recent developments that have the power to upscale restoration, in order to achieving the Bonn Challenge pledge and other national and international commitments (Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the Convention for Biological Diversity (CBD) Post-2020 Agenda, the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) Land Degradation Neutrality, Paris Agreement under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC)) and addressing the needs of the UN Decade 2021-2030 on Ecosystem Restoration. The content adresses thematics of relevance to various audiences: i) flagship restoration initiatives that differ from the so-called “business-as-usual” as they channel more funds, better empower local stakeholders and provide enhanced technical assistance through partners’ coalitions; ii) technical advances that can spread FLR and have a huge potential to be mainstreamed for different reasons (low cost, adaptability, relevance to many ecosystems and contexts, ease of implementation…); iii) the enabling factors for restoration, i.e. coordination, policy environment, resources, knowledge and capacities, as these are the enabling conditions for action to take place on the ground.
