This legal note is based on the publication "The protection of the rights of rural women in Latin America and the Caribbean", produced by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the Spanish Agency for Cooperation International for Development (AECID) through the Spanish Cooperation Training Center in La Antigua Guatemala. This is a brief document that addresses the international and regional regulatory framework that establishes the rights of rural women, and the constitutional and legislative advances in the matter achieved in the region. The specific laws approved are presented, as well as examples of laws that protect the right to productive resources and services, and the right to participation of rural women, adopted in various countries of the region. The note highlights the work of the Parliamentary Front against Hunger in Latin America and the Caribbean (FPH-ALC) – a network of more than 400 legislators supported by FAO, AECID and the Mexican Agency for Cooperation International for Development (AMEXCID) - and the role of national parliaments to advance in the protection of the rights of rural women. It concludes, bringing recommendations for possible actions from the parliamentary sphere to contribute to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals 2 and 5 (SDG2 and SDG5), and strengthen the effective guarantee of the rights of rural women.

Social protection is the set of policies and programmes aimed at preventing or protecting all people against poverty, vulnerability, and social exclusion throughout their lifecycles, particularly the most vulnerable groups. This poster will serve to demonstrate the efforts - and advancements made - in reducing rural poverty and increasing resilience through FAO strategic programmes, such as SP3 and SP5 in recent years. It aims to provide to donors, partners, and policy-makers with the information they need to gain awareness of the impacts of social protection initiatives, and to invest in social protection as a valid pathway out of poverty and hunger. The expected results of this product is an increase awareness of the benefits of social protection initiatives, an increase in visibility of countries' progress in areas pertaining to food insecurity and nutrition and act as springboard to more funding opportunities.

Legislating to promote family farming in Latin America and the Caribbean
Legal brief for parliamentarians in Latin America and the Caribbean No. 9
    2023
    Also available in:

Family farming is an essential activity for the development of the rural world and the food and nutritional security of the peoples of Latin America and the Caribbean. Legislating family farming makes it possible to lay permanent regulatory foundations for the development of favorable policies that promote family farming as part of diversified food systems that are more resilient to climate change through the sustainable use of natural resources. In turn, the legislation on the matter, accompanied by regulations and an adequate budget, is a useful tool to promote the enjoyment of the rights of people dedicated to family farming. The regulations on family farming facilitate access to financing, services, infrastructure, innovation, and markets, allowing greater economic opportunities. In addition, they are key to addressing the inequalities observed in the rural world, allowing greater inclusion and participation of women, indigenous peoples, young people, and the elderly, and promoting synergies between locally based traditional knowledge and innovation.
