    Following the Intergovernmental Group Meeting on Tea in New Delhi in 2010, FAO was requested by the Government of Kenya to assist with a climate change impact assessment of tea in Kenya and to help develop a new strategy to confront its effects. This report is the outcome of a two-year project in Kenya and offers the findings from an integrated climate impact assessment. The analysis covered (i) historical and future links between climate parameters and tea yields, (ii) a carbon life cycle analy sis, (iii) tea management scenarios under climate change using aquacrop model, and (iv) a socio-economic analysis of small holder tea farms and households and their coping options under climate change. The report also summarizes the core elements of an inclusive, multi-stakeholder-led new climate-compatible strategy for tea.

    This case study analyses the economic worthiness of adaptation measures currently being practiced by some farmers on their land in Kenya. It uses cost-benefit analysis (CBA), which is recommended by the Least Developed Countries Expert Group as one of the methodologies to be used in the preparatory stages of the NAPs to rank and prioritize adaptation options according to their costs and benefits to society. The study’s findings can inform policy makers and development practitioners involved in formulating and implementing the NAP process. The study was carried out under the Integrating Agricultural Sectors into National Adaptation Plans programme (NAP-Ag), co-led by UNDP and FAO, with the aim of capacity building, generating evidence-based results for selecting adaptation options, and informing adaptation policy dialogues on adaptation in agriculture.

    Agriculture is one of the most important economic sectors of Sri Lanka and is key to the livelihoodof its population. As agriculture is one of the sectors most vulnerable to climate change, a thorough understanding of its impact is critical for formulating informed and effective adaptation strategies. Climate change challenges agriculture in many ways and affects – directly or indirectly – the economy, productivity, employment and food security. Assessing the impacts of climate change on crops is fundamental for elaborating evidence-based adaptation policies and strategies, guaranteeing sustainable pathways towards intensification and adopting climate-smart agricultural practices. This report presents insights about future climate change impacts on six crops (rice, maize, green gram, big onion, chilli and potato), selected according to a wide range of criteria: contribution to gross domestic product, relevance to food security and role as staple food, importance for farming systems, social impact, effect on employment, role as animal feed, consumer preferences, contribution to the export market, climatic vulnerability/resilience, market prices and price fluctuations, and farming input requirements.

    Tea (Camellia sinensis) is the manufactured drink most consumed in the world. Discovered about 2700BC, it is one of the oldest beverages in the world. Today it is available for consumption in six main varieties, based on the oxidization and fermentation technique applied. The tea crop has rather specific agro-climatic requirements that are only available in tropical and subtropical climates, while some varieties can tolerate marine climates of British mainland and Washington area of the Unites S tates. The tea plant needs a hot, moist climate. Its specific requirements are: temperatures ranging from 10-30oC (zone 8 climate or warmer), minimum annual precipitation of 1250 mm, preferably acidic soils, ideally 0.5-10 degree slopes and elevations up to 2000 meters. Tea production therefore is geographically limited to a few areas around the world and it is highly sensitive to changes in growing conditions. Importantly, its ideal growing conditions are at high risk and expected to significan tly change under climate change.
