Synopsis (short abstract) This document contains the FAO multilingual and multidisciplinary Glossary of Aquaculture in English, French, Spanish, Chinese and Arabic. The glossary has been compiled in English using existing textbooks and glossaries, in particular those already prepared within the various Services of the Organization, namely the Fisheries and Aquaculture Department and the Agriculture and Consumer Protection Department. Therefore it has been validated by international experts and translated into f our FAO official languages. The glossary contains over 2 500 terms and definitions. The Glossary of Aquaculture is available in hard copy, CD-ROM and online at the FAO Web site.

    The five training manuals on Simple methods for aquaculture and the Handbook on small-scale freshwater fish farming presented in this CD-ROM have been produced by the Inland Water Resources and Aquaculture Service of the Fishery Resources Division, FAO Fisheries Department. These manuals are written in simple language and f ocus on the practical aspects of semi-intensive fish culture in fresh waters, from site selection and fish farm construction to the raising, final harvesting and marketi ng of the fish. They are primarily intended for extension workers, technicians and teachers, to help them present the practical aspects of freshwater fish farming to small-scale farmers in developing countries.

    Global production from aquaculture is growing substantially and provides increasingly significant volumes of fish and other aquatic food for human consumption, a trend that is projected to continue. Although aquaculture growth has potential to meet the growing need for aquatic foods and to contribute to food security, poverty reduction and, more broadly, to achieving sustainable development and the Millennium Development Goals, it is increasingly recognized that improved management o f the sector is necessary to achieve this potential. The application of certification in aquaculture is now viewed as a potential market-based tool for minimizing potential negative impacts and increasing societal and consumer benefits and confidence in the process of aquaculture production and marketing. These guidelines provide guidance for the development, organization and implementation of credible aquaculture certification schemes.

    The FAO Yearbook of Fishery and Aquaculture Statistics is a compilation of data on capture production, aquaculture production and commodities. The complete yearbook package for each of these categories – all the key information and statistical tables – is contained on one CD-ROM. An accompanying booklet includes general notes, concepts and classifications, and summary tables as well as a pull-out map of FAO major fishing areas. This issue also includes statistics on apparent fish c onsumption derived from FAO food balance sheets and notes on the major trends and issues relating to the individual statistical sets.
