Synopsis (short abstract) Global production from aquaculture is growing substantially and provides increasingly significant volumes of fish and other aquatic food for human consumption, a trend that is projected to continue. Although aquaculture growth has potential to meet the growing need for aquatic foods and to contribute to food security, poverty reduction and, more broadly, to achieving sustainable development and the Millennium Development Goals, it is increasingly recognized that improved management o f the sector is necessary to achieve this potential. The application of certification in aquaculture is now viewed as a potential market-based tool for minimizing potential negative impacts and increasing societal and consumer benefits and confidence in the process of aquaculture production and marketing. These guidelines provide guidance for the development, organization and implementation of credible aquaculture certification schemes.

The Technical Consultation on Technical Guidelines for Responsible Fish Trade was convened by FAO at the request of the twenty-seventh session of the Committee on Fisheries (COFI) (Rome, 5-9 March 2007) and the tenth session of the COFI Sub-Committee on Fish Trade (Santiago de Compostela, 30 May - 2 June 2006). The Consultation was attended by 34 Members of FAO and by observers from two intergovernmental organizations. The Consultation welcomed the draft Technical Guidelines. Many dele gations noted the importance of ensuring that the draft Technical Guidelines did not result in the creation of additional barriers to trade. The Technical Consultation also agreed that responsible fish trade objectives must be underpinned by responsible management practices. Recognizing that the available time did not permit the Technical Consultation to complete its consideration of the draft guidelines in their entirety, the delegates agreed that the Technical Consultation be re-open ed at a later stage for discussion of the remaining paragraphs.

Delegations from 45 Members of the Organization, observers from 3 intergovernmental organizations and 7 international non-governmental organizations met at FAO Headquarters, 21-23 October 1998, to hold the Technical Consultation on the Feasibility of Developing Non-Discriminatory Technical Guidelines for Eco-Labellling of Products from Marine Capture Fisheries. At the end of its meeting it adopted this report. The meeting discussed: Issues related to the feasibility and practicability of develop ing globally applicable, non-discriminatory technical guidelines for eco-labelling of products from marine capture fisheries; possible contents and format of technical guidelines on eco-labelling of products from marine capture fisheries and procedure for the elaboration of technical guidelines. During the analysis and discussions on the subject no agreement was reached regarding the practicability and feasibility of FAO drafting technical guidelines for eco-labelling for marine fisheries produc ts. However, there was consensus that if an agreement was eventually reached on the feasibility of elaborating guidelines for eco-labelling this should be consistent with the Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries and, in addition, should consider inter alia a number of principles listed in the Report (see paragraph 11). It was stressed that, if so decided by COFI, the development of technical guidelines should take into account and be consistent with on-going related work by other inter-gove rnmental organizations, in particular the World Trade Organization (WTO). It was further mentioned to take into account the work of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the procedures adopted by the Codex Alimentarius Commission as well as other relevant experiences in the subject. The Technical Consultation agreed that, if COFI decided that FAO should prepare technical guidelines, they should be voluntary and the process of drafting the Code of Conduct for Responsible Fi sheries should be followed.

This is the report of the Technical Consultation on International Guidelines for the Management of Deep-sea Fisheries in the High Seas held in Rome in two sessions (4¿8 February and 25¿29 August 2008). The aim of the Consultation was to review the draft International Guidelines for the Management of Deep-sea Fisheries in the High Seas which had been developed at the request of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations Committee on Fisheries at its twenty-seventh ses sion (March 2007) in order to assist States and regional fisheries management organizations and arrangements in sustainably managing deep-sea fisheries and in implementing the United Nations General Assembly Resolution 61/105 chapter 10, concerning responsible fisheries in the marine ecosystem. This document contains the report of the Technical Consultation as well as the International Guidelines as adopted by the meeting.
