No results found.Small-scale forest-based processing enterprises comprise an important, but neglected, part of the forestry and forest industries sector. They process a large part of the raw materials from the forest and supply some of the main markets for forest products, in particular in the rural areas of developing countries. Our concern in the work reported on in this publication has been to determine the main features, prospects and problems of such small-scale enterprises and what support could enhance their developmental contribution, and therefore the developmental impact of the forest sector. Many small enterprises are currently unstable, and offer little security or prospect of self-reliance for those engaged in them. These problems need to be tackled by promoting viable enterprises run by rural people through effective participatory organizations which can increase peoples' control over their own economic destiny. External supp ort to increase production and efficiency needs to be compatible with those valuable elements of local culture which still have a role to play in the modern context. -

No results found.The “Practical Training Manual on Doing Aquaculture as a Business for Small and Medium-Scale farmers” is composed by two modules: Module 1 “The Technical Dimension of Doing Aquaculture as a Business” and Module 2 “The Economic Dimension of Doing Aquaculture as a Business”. The target users are small and medium-scale fish farmers. The purpose is to enhance their knowledge and capacities in understanding and applying the basic economic and financial principles and concepts of doing aquaculture as a business in their daily activities. Module 2 first introduces the sustainability concept and its principles for aquaculture development, the definition and characteristics of both commercial aquaculture and non-commercial aquaculture and concept of planning of aquaculture as a business. It also shows small and medium-scale fish farmers how to assess the economic and financial viability of their fish farms. In details, it introduces the concepts and technicalities of cost structure, sensitivity , financial and cash flow analyses. -

No results found.The regional workshop “Development of Aquaculture Insurance System for Small-scale Farmers” 20–21 September 2016, Bangkok, was joined by participants from China, Philippines, Thailand and Viet Nam. It contains two parts. The first aimed at answering the question, “What would make insurance available for and accessible to small-scale farmers?” The second was focused on exploring potential shrimp insurance schemes. The Workshop achieved the following outcomes: (1) made farmers, farmer advisers, re searchers and academics more familiar with the business and technical requirements of insurers, (2) made insurers become more familiar with the circumstances and needs of farmers, (3) confirmed that insurers continue to view aquaculture as a high-risk industry, (4) highlighted the need to incorporate risk assessment and management in the development of better farm management practices in line with the requirements of insurance, and (5) confirmed the usefulness of bundling financial products in t he development of institutional services for farmers.
