This study explores and identifies indicators to assess sustainability performance of animal diets, based on the eleven sustainability elements selected in the sustainable animal diet concept. Besides, it proposes possible quantification methods for each of the identified indicators. Based on literature research, indicators were identified for stages in the animal production chain that are related to animal feed production and feeding and that can affect the people, planet or profit dimension o f sustainability. The working method included identification of all production processes or activities within each stage of the feed production chain and their impact on the sustainability dimensions. These activities and their possible impacts guided the identification of relevant indicators for the eleven sustainability elements. The indicators that were identified following this method were discussed with FAO experts to select the most important ones. Twenty indicators to assess sustainabili ty performance of animal diets were identified for the three dimensions of sustainability: ten indicators for the planet dimension, seven for the people dimension, and three for the profit dimension. For each sustainability indicator, a quantification method has been proposed. Results of this study provide a basis for further definition of indicators and assessment methods of sustainability of animal diets, finally resulting in, e.g., a tool to assess and compare sustainability of animal diets.

The FAO Expert Consultation and Workshop on Protein Sources for the Animal Feed Industry was held in Bangkok, Thailand, from 29 April to 3 May 2002. This Consultation included talks by experts on the overview of world protein needs and supply; scientific aspects of protein nutrition of farm animals; local protein resources and supplementation for livestock production; the agricultural alternatives for the production of increased supplies of protein feeds from oilseeds, legumes and by-products; a nd innovative developments in the production and delivery of protein raw materials. It also included a discussion on the world market and sources of proteins for the animal feed industry: present and future trends, problems and perceptions of feed safety and developments in the feed industry.

The status of application, capacities and the enabling environment for agricultural biotechnologies in the Asia-Pacific region: Regional background study 2019
    Also available in:
    No results found.

The study found that agricultural biotechnologies are well entrenched in the Asia-Pacific region and their use is expanding, as are the capacities and enabling environments needed to support their use. There are, however, significant differences among countries in their application of biotechnology in all four agricultural sectors: crops, livestock, fisheries and forestry. Small island states and many least developed countries (LDCs), such as Afghanistan and Mongolia, are yet to benefit appreciably from the biotechnology revolution. Multiple factors such as low capacity and the small size of their markets constrain them from reaping the benefits of biotechnology. Some countries, such as Cambodia, the Lao People’s Democratic Republic and Uzbekistan, are in the initial stages of applying biotechnology but they have the potential to move forward. A few, such as Sri Lanka and Nepal, have not yet started to apply biotechnology but have the potential capacity and a good policy framework to move ahead. Recent changes in Viet Nam and Myanmar indicate the establishment of an enabling milieu that can take the countries forward in agricultural biotechnology. Larger and emerging economies, such as China, India and the Republic of Korea, are using biotechnology extensively in all four sectors.
