    This multivolume field guide covers the species of interest to fisheries of the major marine resource groups exploited in the Western Central Pacific. The area of coverage includes FAO Fishing Area 71 and the southwestern portion of Fishing Area 77 corresponding to the South Pacific Commission mandate area. The marine resource groups included are seaweeds, corals, bivalves, gastropods, cephalopods, stomatopods, shrimps, lobsters, crabs, holothurians, sharks, batoid fishes, chimaeras, bony fishes , estuarine crocodiles, sea turtles, sea snakes, and marine mammals.

    This report, covering work done in the U.S. Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands and in Papua-New Guinea, is based upon interviews with Government and fishery Officials, marine turtle fishermen and farmers, and local inhabitants in a position to contribute useful information and opinions. It also covers personal visits by the author to turtle nesting beaches and feeding areas, market places and turtle farms. It follows Informal report FI/SF/SOP/REG 102/2 by Harold Hirth.

    The following report is based upon interviews with Government and fishery officials and visits to sites of turtle activity such as nesting grounds, feeding areas, market places, turtles fishermen camps, etc. In 1969 SPC and SPIFDA sent Marine Turtle Questionnaires to Fishery Dept. in the South and South West Pacific and the few replies provided some background information on turtle resources. In most cases, the respondents to the questionnaires were interviewed by the author and the pertinent da ta were included in this report.
