    This report is based on the high level forum and capacity development for parliamentarians held in Sierra Leone in November 2020 organized by FAO,IISD, OXFAM and WILDAF/AMNet, in partnership with the Sierra Leone Parliament. The forum provided a unique opportunity to facilitate dialogue at national level between parliamentarians and other stakeholders and to build the capacity of parliamentarians and increase their knowledge of the tools needed to engage in the development of laws and policies that contribute to gender equality in the agriculture sector with a view to accelerating progress towards sustainable development goals, in particular Zero Hunger.

    Under the first phase of the programme, a number of methodologies and approaches were piloted which contributed to establishing the Joint Programme ‘Accelerating Progress Towards Rural Women’s Economic Empowerment’ (JP RWEE) as a well proven model for rural women’s economic empowerment.     The Country gender spotlight Guatemala, is part of a series that puts a spotlight on countries, showcasing examples of initiatives that have improved the lives of rural people and empowered rural women. It highlights some of the good practices the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has carried out with the Government of Guatemala and other partners, to promote gender equality and build the resilience and economic empowerment of rural women. Some of the initiatives include building skills and knowledge for income generation, reduction of women’s work burden and more. These examples show how FAO is working with rural women and men to boost agricultural production, improve their livelihoods and secure their nutritional and food security.
