This concept note has been produced in response to a request by 74 agriculture ministers in January 2019 during the Global Forum on Food and Agriculture (GFFA) and supported financially by the Federal Republic of Germany. It proposes the creating of a new body, an International Digital Council for Food and Agriculture, to enhance international cooperation, the exchange of ideas and experiences across borders, creating synergies and avoiding duplication of efforts. It will strive to keep pace with rapid developments in digitalization, working with new digital tools and the highest expertise available. In line with this, it will help to tackle challenges of food security, hunger, health, inclusiveness and sustainability in the agri-food system at national, regional and international levels. With this approach, the Digital Council would provide structured and strategic agricultural policy recommendations on digitalization to governmental and non-governmental actors, strengthen international cooperation in the agri-food system to identify the challenges and solutions. Examples of activities include the organization of international forums to share best policy practices, and promoting interaction among farmers associations from different countries and national- and international-level stakeholders. The scope and function of the proposed Digital Council are summarised herein for consideration by government ministers, international organization members, donors and other stakeholders. It was highly noted amongst all stakeholders involved in the process of producing this concept note that the proposed Digital Council would have significant impacts on increasing the positive benefits of digitization in the food and agriculture sector, contributing to improving rural livelihoods.

Advancing Digitalization in Gender Sensitive Agrifood Systems in Pacific Small Island Developing States (SIDS) - FMM/GLO/170/MUL 2024

Despite a significant potential for innovation and digitalization in the agrifood systems of Pacific SIDS, and the power of digital tools in aiding development efforts, the operating themes of agrifood systems, digitalization and gender empowerment are still in their infancy in the Pacific region, which also faces challenges such as remoteness, limited capacities and natural disasters. Acknowledging the need for development partners to invest in the enabling environment to achieve more impactful results, the subprogramme focused on advancing digitisation of gender-sensitive agrifood systems in eight target countries, namely the Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, Marshall Islands, Palau, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga and Vanuatu. Investing in digital literacy for women and youth was expected to yield immediate results through a practice-based approach. The subprogramme aimed to leverage local creativity in digitalization, attract financial partnerships and address the gender divide while complementing ongoing efforts in the targeted countries.

Enabling More Inclusive, Efficient and Sustainable Agrifood Systems - GCP/GLO/002/ITA 2022
    Also available in:

In Africa, boosting sustainable food value chain development can contribute to enabling smallholders and small service providers to take advantage of burgeoning food economies. There are indeed new opportunities due to the increasing and changing food demand, coming in particular from urban areas. One of the central drivers of growth are food based small and medium sized enterprises ( agrifood SMEs), which can become key protagonists of the transformation of agriculture towards more sustainable food systems. However, these SMEs struggle to take advantage of the increased market opportunities. Among the barriers inherent to agriculture and that hinder investments  such as high risks and weak mitigation strategies, limited availability of collateral, high transaction costs, and lack of business skills among small entrepreneurs  there is also the lack of capacity of financial institutions and private investors to assess profitable business opportunities within agribusiness markets. Against this background, this project aimed to foster Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) aligned investments in agrifood systems in Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Kenya and the Niger, to enable more inclusive, efficient and sustainable agrifood systems in these countries, and beyond.
