    Towards transformation of agricultural landscapes: Determination of agroforestry tree species producing beneficial ecosystem services to local farmers in Nigeria

    The aim of this study is to transform agricultural landscapes through incorporating tree species that produce ecosystem services beneficial to local farmers. To achieve this, the study assessed existing diversity of tree species producing ecosystem services in agricultural farmlands in selected local communities of southwest Nigeria. The information obtained will then be used to design strategy for intensification of agroforestry tree species for transformation of agricultural landscapes. Purposive sampling was employed in selecting 66 local farmers who has personal farmlands. Information on available tree species and their diversification on farmlands were obtained through inventory and field observation. Primary information obtained through questionnaire administration include ecosystem services provided by trees on the farmlands. A total of 38 forest tree species (24 families) were identified on the different farmlands. Provisioning services dominated the ecosystem services benefits obtained by the farmers and their households. The study has revealed the different ecosystem services provided by forest trees on farmlands. Meanwhile, most of the farmers prefer trees that meet their personal needs. This means for proper adoption of forest trees at local level in agroforestry system, such trees must be able to meet local demands by providing some of their basic needs. The basic needs range from food to medicines, energy, cultural benefits, among others. Meeting of such needs are sometimes location specifics, hence the needto carry out adequate survey of such needs for intended intervention strategy.     A preliminary study on ecological features of two natural enemies against two vectors of pine wilt disease for mass rearing in Korea

    Two species of the genus Monochamus (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae), M. alternatus and M. saltuarius are well-known as vectors of the pine wilt disease and they causes economically damages in South Korea. Among various control methods to reduce the density of vectors, a method by biological control agents (natural enemies) is eco-friendly indispensable. Since 2017, we have carried out the studies on the parasitic natural enemies againt for the vector species and found two parasitoids, Spathius verustus Chao, 1977 (Braconidae) and Cyanopterus flavator (Fabricius, 1793) (Bracondiae), would be a useful agents for biological controls. For accumulation of biological data, we conducted a preliminary study on life span and parasitic rate of two parasitic wasps against for two vector species. As results, we found that S. verustus has the longest adult life span of 33.4±19.2 days (avg.) in M. alternatus (T=30°C, H=60%) and C. flavator has the longest adult life span of 25.1±10.6 days (avg.) in M. alternatus (T=25°C, H=60%). The average parasitic rate (62.5%) of S. verustus was highest in M. alternatus (T=30°C, H=60%). In addition, it is confirmed that the offsprings of S. verustus can be made by parthenogenetic reproducton. Keywords: Research ID: 3622037

    Bitternut hickory (Carya cordiformis(Wangenh) K. Koch), a successful non-native tree species in the north-west of Romania

    The most abundant and most uniformly distributed of all the hickories (Carya spp.), growing throughout the eastern United States, bitternut hickory was introduced to Europe after 1689. It was used as ornamental species especially in parks and dendrological gardens as well as forest species in some European countries (e.g. Austria, Belgium, France, Germany).
    In Romania, it was planted exclusively in parks and dendrological gardens, with the exception of Sacueni Forest District. In this area, the first three individuals of bitternut hickory were planted in 1900, reaching nowadays breast diameters between 72.3 cm and 79.2 cm and heights over 25 m. Using seeds collected from these trees and seedlings produced in the local nursery, the species has expanded after 1957 and the total area of thirteen stands including bitternut hickory reaches nowadays 39.21 ha, with some interesting characteristics:
    - it is found in monocultures as well as mixed stands (proportion between 10 percent and 90 percent) with different broadleaved tree species, both native (pedunculate oak Quercus robur L., small-leaved linden Tilia cordata L., sycamore Acer pseudoplatanus L.) and exotic (black walnut Juglans nigra L., northern red oak Quercus rubra L., pin oak Quercus palustris Muenchh., and black cherry Prunus serotina Ehrh.);
    - bitternut hickory grew quickly in youth and reached mean diameters between 18 cm (25-30 years of age) and 32 cm (60 years) and mean heights between 16 m (25-30 years of age) and 25 m (60 years). These dimensions are similar to or even bigger than the associated species, both native and exotic;
    - the species regenerates easily by seed and its seedlings have a higher shade tolerance than most of its associates, even though bitternut hickory is considered as intolerant of shade;
    - it is a good self-pruner and epicormic branching is not a problem;
    - it has never been affected by any damaging agent and is wind-firm, owing to its dense root system, with a pronounced taproot. Keywords: Sustainable forest management, Adaptive and integrated management ID: 3471954
