    The pressing need for increased agricultural production in the years ahead can only be met by more efficient use of our land and water resources including more widespread and better irrigation in those regions where rainfall is inadequate. Production gains will be shortlived unless the attendant hazards of salinization, water logging and lowered fertility are kept in check by effective planning and management based on a thorough understanding of the soil conditions. Soil survey and land classifi cation are generally accepted essential preliminaries to investment in irrigation development. This publication aims to describe the special requirements of soil survey for irrigation development, and assumes that the reader is familiar with basic soil science and soil survey techniques.

    After endorsement of the World Reference Base for Soil Resources (WRB) as a universal soil correlation tool by the International Union of Soil Sciences (IUSS), the Reference Base (RB) working group has endeavoured to promote, test and improve the system further . The aim of this publication is to make the WRB available to young scientists at an affordable price. This text is published in conjunction with a CD-ROM that contains additional sample profiles, analytical data and virtual field excu rsions. The document and the CD-ROM are produced jointly by the Wageningen Agricultural University (Wageningen, The Netherlands), the International Institute for Aerospace Survey and Earth Sciences (ITC, Enschede, The Netherlands), the International Soil Reference and Information Centre (ISRIC, Wageningen, The Netherlands), the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences of the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (Belgium) and FAO. This publication succeeds the Lecture notes on the major soils of the world by P .M. Driessen and R. Dudal, eds. (1991) which were based on the Legend of the FAO Soil Map of the World.

    The completion of this comprehensive harmonized soil information database will improve estimation of current and future land potential productivity, help identify land and water limitations, and enhance assessing risks of land degradation, particularly soil erosion. The HWSD contributes sound scientific knowledge for planning sustainable expansion of agricultural production and for guiding policies to address emerging land competition issues concerning food production, bio-energy demand and thre ats to biodiversity. This is of critical importance for rational natural resource management and in making progress towards achieving Millennium Development goals of eradicating hunger and poverty and addressing the food security and sustainable agricultural development, especially with regard to the threats of global climate change and the needs for adaptation and mitigation. This digitized and online accessible soil information system will allow policy makers, planners and experts to over come some of the shortfalls of data availability to address the old challenges of food production and food security and plan for new challenges of climate change and accelerated natural resources degradation.
