    The study analyses present demand and supply scenario as well as makes future projections of wood demand in India. Domestic sources constitute forests and trees outside forests. It is deducted that the forests of India supply around 25-30 m cum of wood and another 20-25 m cum is supplied from trees outside forests. Therefore,the total supply from domestic sources is about 45-55 m cum. Overall, it is estimated based on the past data, that by 2022, India’s demand of wood will be around 75-100 million cubic meters (m cum). India’s trade in wood and wood products is also studied in detail to get a holistic picture of the wood sector in the country and to understand international dynamics of the wood trade. The ITTO provides figure of 50 m cum of logs produced by India and another 4 m cum of logs imported into the country. India is a net importer of wood and wood products. The total importof wood products was 6.8 b US $ in 2019 with exports valued at 1.2 b US $. As of 2019, wood pulp constituted 20%, Printing and writing paper 19%, Recovered paper 14%, industrial roundwood and newsprint both 11% of the imports. The challenge for India is to overcome the shortage of about 25-30 m cum of timber so that imports are minimised as well as the domestic illegal supply can be stopped. Subsequently, it can be a net exporter of wood and wood products. For this, strategy to enhance output from its production forests as well agroforestry sector are discussed and necessary policy interventions are suggested.     Tensile performance of glued-in-rod connections for larch glulam

    In this study, the tensile stiffness and strength of glued-in-rod connections were investigated. A hole (diameter 20mm) was drilled on the cross-section of larch glulam (moisture content: 10%). A steel bar (diameter 16mm) was inserted 300mm into the hole of the glulam. The gap between the hole of glulam and the steel bar was filled with epoxy. Six specimens were prepared and the tensile test was evaluated with UTM (100kN, Zwick) by KS F ISO 9087. The test speed was 3mm/min and a Linear Variable Differential Transformer (LVDT) was installed between the glulam and steel bar. Five of the six specimens were not failed at the maximum capacity of the UTM, and one specimen (No. 3) was destroyed at 89.3kN. When the steel bar was pulled out, the load decreased sharply, and the epoxy and wood were attached around the steel bar. The tensile stiffness was a range of 41.7 kN/mm ~ 54.1 kN/mm, and the average value was 45.8 kN/mm. The tensile strength was 0.3 kN/mm (91.5kN/300mm).     Timber is a renewable and sustainable material which potentially plays a leading role in the development of a sustainable society. This is the rationale behind Japan passing the Act for Promotion of Use of Wood in Buildings, etc. to Contribute to the Realization of a Decarbonized Society in 2021. To promote timber utilization, the forestry and timber business sectors should cooperate with green consumers. However, there are several challenges to address before such a cooperation can be achieved: illegal logging, vulnerable forest management, and related trade. FSC and PEFC have made substantial contributions by developing forest management schemes with supply chain certification. However, voluntary certification schemes have a cost bottleneck to become mainstream in the global timber supply chain. The Woodmiles Forum, a Japanese private organization, argued that locality is an important factor in eliminating environmental risks. Firstly, it reduces the environmental impact of CO2 emissions from the transportation process, which accounts for half the carbon footprint. Secondly, it reduces the cost of transporting long-distance environmental information, such as forest and legality certification. Taking advantage of this accumulation, the Forum evaluated the new national stadium, which was the main venue for Tokyo 2020. The stadium is built of regional local timber from all over Japan. We compared the results of this evaluation with the evaluation of the facilities in London 2012. The environmental significance of regional timber is that the transparency of the supply chain can be easily ensured. Additionally, the environmental load of the timber transportation process is small, and this is the focus of this study.
