    Animal agriculture substantially contributes to the world economy by providing food, jobs, and financial security for billions of people. With increasing concerns over global climate change and pollution, efforts are underway to reduce the overall environmental impact of animal production. This document analyses emission of non-carbon dioxide greenhouse gases, an important segment of the environmental footprint of animal production. It has been developed by a team that included experts in animal /ruminant nutrition, manure and soil management, animal and whole-farm modeling, and animal reproduction. Over 900 publications focusing on nutritional and manure management mitigation strategies for methane (enteric or from manure) and nitrous oxide emissions were reviewed and analysed, and a synthesis of feed-, animal management- and manure management-based mitigation approaches and interactions amongst them has been presented. This document will help researchers, animal industry consultants, policy-makers, animal producers, non-governmental organizations, and other groups with interest in maintaining a viable and environmentally-responsible animal production sector to make sound decisions on selection and adoption of effective and economically feasible greenhouse gas mitigation practices.

    Enhancing countries’ capacity to report to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change on greenhouse gas emissions for the Agriculture, Forestry and Other Land Use sector: Colombia 2016

    Colombia has submitted two national communications (NCs 2001, 2010) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), providing information on greenhouse gas (GHG) inventories, and measures to mitigate and facilitate adequate adaptation to climate change, among other information. In 2015, Colombia also presented its First Biennial Update Report (BUR), including the REDD+ technical annex. In 2010 and 2012, GHG emissions from the Agriculture, Forestry and Other Land Use (AFOLU ) sector contributed to respectively 58 % and 43% of the national GHG emissions. Since 2013, the United Nations Collaborative Programme on Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation in Developing Countries (UN-REDD) and the Mitigation of Climate Change in Agriculture (MICCA) Programmes have provided support to Ecuador for the preparation and reporting of the national GHG inventory (NGHGI), AFOLU component, to the UNFCCC. This brief relates the implemented activities and fruitf ul collaboration that were fundamental in assisting Ecuador in successfully meeting its commitments to the UNFCCC reporting process for the Agriculture and LULUCF sectors.

    Livestock statistics made available in FAOSTAT offer valuable information on livestock numbers and production, provided by FAO by country and over a long period. This data is used by the academic community to estimate relevant environmental statistics and indicators, including the availability and use of livestock manure and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Such information is key to help designing and implementing sustainable agricultural practices. The estimates of livestock manure are computed and disseminated in FAOSTAT by livestock type, by country, and in regional aggregates, for the period 1961–2018.
