    Fisheries and aquaculture is a sector of special importance to food security, nutrition and livelihood in the Asia-Pacific Region, which can be significantly impacted by climate changes and related disaster risks. Effectively addressing climate change impacts and managing disaster risks in fisheries and aquaculture sector are vitally important to building resilience of the sector for sustained and greater contribution to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) related to ending hunger, poverty eradication and sustainable use of natural resources. FAO member countries in the region have been making good effort and significant progress in addressing climate change impacts and related disaster risks with support of international communities. A FAO regional consultative workshop was convened to bring together a wide range of players including country governments, regional organizations and other partners to share their knowledge and good practices in addressing climate change implications for fisheries and aquaculture in the region, to assess the progress made in addressing issues with marine capture fisheries, inland capture fisheries, coastal aquaculture and inland aquaculture in the context of climate change adaptation and mitigation in implementing the national plan of actions for addressing climate change in fisheries and aquaculture, and to recommend strategies for addressing institutional and capacity gaps in building climate-resilience fisheries and aquaculture industry in the region. The publication is the compilation of the workshop executive report, background technical papers, extended summary of presentations by representatives from participating government and FAO partners, and the workshop conclusions and recommendations.

    This is the fifth edition of the Asia and the Pacific Regional Overview of Food Security and Nutrition annual report. This publication is led by FAO’s Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific (RAP) and jointly contributed to by United Nations' partner agencies (UNICEF, WFP, WHO), on the region’s progress (or lack thereof) to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (in particular SDG 2 – Ending Hunger) and the World Health Assembly (WHA) 2030 targets on food security and nutrition. In recent years, previous editions reported that progress was stalling, then regressing and then more recently pushing us further off track. This reverse was evident even before the COVID-19 pandemic took hold in 2020. The decline continued and worsened during the pandemic and the data is captured in this report. Updated estimates on the cost and affordability of a healthy diet show that nearly 45 percent of the region’s population cannot afford one. Reducing the cost of a healthy diet and making it more affordable is a critical element for achieving ending hunger (SDG2) and also the other SDGs. This year’s report also looks closely at food security and nutrition in urban areas which will increasingly contribute to the progress in SDG indicators as the proportion of the urban population across the region is set to cross 50 percent in this decade.

    Reducing food insecurity, vulnerability and malnutrition is central to the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and the World Food Summit targets. FAO is technically assisting national governments and related stakeholders to better plan, target and monitor food security and programmes, and progress is continuously being made in addressing problems of hunger and malnutrition. FAO’s food insecurity and vulnerability information and mapping systems, commonly known as FIVIMS, i nclude the networks of national information systems that assemble, analyse and disseminate data on food insecurity and vulnerability. At the international level FIVIMS implements diverse activities in support of national information systems for them to become part of an international information exchange network, and at the country level FIVIMS works with a network of information systems that gather and analyze relevant national and subnational data that measure food insecurity and vulnerabilit y. The Asia Pacific Network for Food and Nutrition, in collaboration with the Asia FIVIMS project, has undertaken an important initiative through this regional expert consultation and meeting to review food insecurity and vulnerability assessment methodologies used in selected countries of the Asian region. This report provides a summary of the presentations and discussions on FIVIMS methodologies and an update on country FIVIMS activities.
