    This report is part of a larger study that seeks to identify the knowledge gaps around gender in the forest sectors of Côte d’Ivoire, Viet Nam and Honduras by assessing the role of women in wood-based value chains and identifying possible interventions or recommendations to reduce gender disparities during VPA negotiations and implementation. This study seeks to complement the emerging body of work on the topic of gender (Forest Trends, 2019; SRD, 2020) in the VPA, by presenting a specific case study on the role of women in the wood supply chain of La Xuyen wood village, in Nam Dinh province, Viet Nam and exploring how the VPA could promote and strengthen gender mainstreaming in Viet Nam using this example.

    This brief outlines a rigorous and standardized approach for value chain analysis and design, taking a systems perspective to analyse and influence the behaviour and performance of value chain actors influenced by a complex environment. The brief also covers the design of upgrading strategies and associated development plans, based on the identification of root causes of value chain bottlenecks and using a participatory and multistakeholder approach. The brief is primarily based on FAO’s Sustainable Food Value Chain (SFVC) framework which promotes a systems-based development of agrifood value chains that are economically, socially and environmentally sustainable, as well as resilient to shocks and stressors. The end-product of the application of the methodology is a VC report with four components. The first two components, a functional analysis and a sustainability assessment, make up the VC analysis. The last two components, an upgrading strategy and a development plan, represent the VC design.

    The development of sustainable bioenergy policies is crucial to low-carbon and climate-resilient development. Policy-makers and other stakeholders need relevant, science-based indicators to help develop the bioenergy sector while also meeting national goals for sustainable development. Within this context, the Global Bioenergy Partnership (GBEP) was established in 2006, and a set of 24 sustainability indicators for bioenergy were designed to monitor and report on the environmental, social and economic aspects of bioenergy production, including greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reductions. This project contributed to the strengthening of capacities to use the GBEP indicators in Paraguay and Viet Nam by providing technical support and capacity building.
