No results found.The FAO Fisheries Department conducts reviews of aquaculture development status and trends on a regular basis. This document is a result of such an exercise conducted during 2005 and 2006. The regional review is a synthesis of the National Aquaculture Sector Overview (NASO) of 22 countries from Latin America and the Caribbean. The production volume and value data have been derived from the latest FAO FISHSTAT Plus database for 2003. As part of the review process, a regional expert workshop was c onducted in Panama, Republic of Panama, in 2005, to discuss the regional aquaculture development status and trends. The report of this expert workshop is also included in this review. The regional review provides a description of how the aquaculture sector developed in Latin America and the Caribbean over the past decade. The review and analysis of data and information clearly show that the sector is growing exponentially with salmon, shrimp and tilapia as the leading species. However, ac cording to data recorded by FAO it may be observed that during the last 10 years there are important increments in the production of other groups of species such as macroalgae, bivalves, caracids and catfish. Chile, Brazil, Mexico and Ecuador are the leading countries in terms of production for 2003. Most countries are showing a rapid growth of the sector thus having important social and economic effects on regional and local economies mostly through medium to larger scale commercial aquaculture . Rural aquaculture in Latin America is still largely dependent on State or international technical and financial support schemes. Overall, aquaculture in this region continues to grow steadily but will need greater organization and coordination between the private sector and government particularly to achieve larger social effects. -

No results found.The workshop examined the status of aquaculture in Latin America and the Caribbean, with a focus on its contribution to economic and social development and the major difficulties it faces. It also looked at previous occurrences of cooperation for aquaculture in the region with the presentation and analysis of a summary of past activities and mechanisms. The central issue placed before the workshop was the proposal to establish a new regional cooperation network for aquaculture, based o n a study carried out by FAO and additional information on similar activities conducted by the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Council (APEC) Fisheries Working Group and the Latin American Organization for Fisheries Development (OLDEPESCA). The workshop recommended the establishment of an intergovernmental cooperation network for aquaculture that would be open to all the countries of the Americas and would establish linkages with equivalent mechanisms in other regions. It identifie d key issues for the network’s attention, together with its possible structure and sources and modalities of financing. The agenda and list of participants are given in Appendixes A and B respectively. Appendixes C and D contain background documents prepared to facilitate discussion. -

No results found.The need for a dedicated information system intended to produce a continuous flow of information for forecasting, evaluating, measuring, maintaining and controlling events and performance in aquaculture has been emphasized by the countries in the Region in various fora. In response to the above the regional Project AQUILA II (GCP/RLA/102/ITA - “Support to regional aquaculture activities in Latin America and the Caribbean”) decided to include in its workplan an activity totally devoted toward to the design and development of an Information System to assist Aquaculture Planning in Latin America and the Caribbean, SIPAL. The essential features of its conceptual design were set out at a workshop held in Santiago de Chile, 10–14 December 1990, with the contribution of the participating countries Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Ecuador, Mexico, Panama and Venezuela, as well as of the representatives of FAO Fisheries Department (cf.FAO document COPESCAL/91/Inf. 16 of March 1991).
