FAO Regional Office for Europe and Central Asia and UN World Tourism Organisation is organizing an online side event in the frames of the UNECE Regional Sustainable Development Forum “ Rural women, agritourism and digitalization: practices and experiences that contribute to sustainable development” on 30 March 2023. Agritourism has high potential to serve as a factor for economic stability in times of multiple crises, by creating jobs, preserving rural and ecological landscapes, promoting local products and contributing to recreation needs. The advantages of agricultural tourism are particularly important for rural women, and include the diversification of sources of income, the creation of marketing opportunities for agricultural and handmade products, and the longer-term contribution to women’s economic empowerment. There is a lack of experience sharing in the region on the ways in which agritourism can act as a driver for local development, and furthermore, how digital tools can be used to their full potential and how rural women can benefit. This side event addresses the knowledge gap by showcasing promising practices from the region which focus on bridging the divide between urban and rural populations, narrowing gender gaps and promoting sustainable development. The side event addresses the intersection of multiple SDGs, including: SDG 1 – No Poverty; SDG 2 – Zero Hunger; SDG 5 – Gender Equality; SDG 8 – Decent Work and Economic Growth; and SDG 11 – Sustainable Cities and Communities. -

No results found.The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) launched the Digital Village Initiative (DVI) to promote digital innovations that support inclusive, gender-sensitive rural development and sustainable agrifood transformation in line with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The DVI adopts a country-led, user-centred, and holistic digital ecosystem approach to digital village development. This approach combines territorial strategies, innovative design, pilot projects, and local ownership to ensure that digital solutions are tailored to each community's specific needs and demands, fostering long-term sustainability.In the Asia-Pacific region, the FAO Regional Office conducted an assessment of digital village models across 13 countries, documenting pilots, models and prototypes. Inspired by this diversity, FAO developed a blueprint for supporting digital villages based on country ownership, bottom-up approaches and ecosystem-centred development. This blueprint guides the DVI's implementation and customizes support functions to each country's digital needs and advancement. In Latin America and the Caribbean, access to food and nutritional security, the poverty situation, and the capacity to respond to climate change are strongly related to gender, ethnic-racial origin, age group, and territory differences. A situation that demands observing the intertwined nature of these inequalities and proposing new ways to achieve sustainable development, leaving no one behind. This challenge prompted the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) to develop a guide that facilitates the development of programmes and projects with an intersectional approach. The objective of the tool is to give rise to innovative and sensitive work methodologies that allow the identification of inequalities and the development of socio-territorially relevant and systemic solutions, aimed to eliminate the knots of inequality. Contributing in this way to the effective implementation of FAO's policies on gender equality and on indigenous and tribal peoples.
