The FAO project “Securing Biodiversity Conservation and Sustainable Use in Huangshan Municipality” was implemented in China (Huangshan Municipality) and funded by the Global Environment Facility. The rationale behind the project intervention was that the biodiversity conservation objectives were not being fully achieved through the existing mechanisms. The final independent evaluation of the project rated it as Satisfactory, and verified that most of the outcomes and outputs of the project were achieved. The main shortcoming was limited progress with best practices and lessons learned from the project being taken up and replicated elsewhere in non-participating nature reserves. Evaluation recommendations included finalizing the sustainability plan; continuing to support non-participating reserves to improve management effectiveness; assessing the effectiveness of a related innovative protected area management model; and considering opportunities to promote internationally the project’s achievements, best practices and innovations.
