The ongoing conflict between Hamas and Israel erupted on 7 October 2023, leading to Israeli strikes on the Gaza Strip. Within two months, over 85 percent of Gaza's population was displaced, severely impacting agriculture. FAO conducted two assessments of agricultural damage during the conflict. As of 31 December 2023, significant damage was evident, with home barns (206), broiler farms (172), and sheep farms (149) being the most damaged. A total of 488 agricultural wells were damaged, with North Gaza (184) and Gaza (178) being the most affected governorates. Approximately 20.5 percent (261.8 ha) of greenhouses suffered significant damage, with Gaza and North Gaza being the worst affected. About 27.5 percent (4 319.4 ha) of all cropland in Gaza was damaged, with Gaza governorate accounting for the most damage (1 482.1 ha). Future recommendations include integrating field and remote sensing data and ensuring transparent access to satellite imagery for improved response programmes. The Gaza population faces extreme food consumption gaps and severe nutritional vulnerability, necessitating frequent updates and close monitoring for rehabilitation of the agriculture sector.

The occupied Palestinian territories, comprising the West Bank and the Gaza Strip (WBGS), face a protracted protection crisis with humanitarian consequences, driven by insufficient respect for international law by all sides. In 2014, as a result of hostilities over July-August, there was a sharp increase in the severity of humanitarian needs in Gaza, as well as heightened tension and intensified clashes across the West Bank. In Gaza, the agricultural livelihoods of 32 000 farming households and 8 000 agricultural wage labourers were affected, with heavy damage of assets that caused shortages and high food prices. This in turn increased the severity of food insecurity.

A framework for gender-responsive livestock development
Contributing to a world free from hunger, malnutrition, poverty and inequality

Gender dynamics affect the ways in which the livestock sector contributes to sustaining livelihoods. Women comprise most poor livestock keepers in low- and middle-income countries, and are less represented in scaled-up production enterprises and other income-earning livestock-related activities. They also have limited access to livestock information, input and output services, as compared to their male counterparts. When production scales up, often as a result of investments or government policies to develop value chains, women can bear the brunt of increased workload and be pushed out of the accrued benefits. Such gender-based disadvantage is not only hindering the development of the livestock sector, but is also widening the gender gap. In this context, empowering women and girls is essential for both the sustainable development of the livestock sector, and for achieving gender equality. These in turn are key for building a world free from hunger, malnutrition and poverty, with resilient livelihoods for everyone. The Framework for Gender-Responsive Livestock Development was jointly developed by the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the World Bank and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), with the aim of supporting the planning and implementation of gender-responsive policies, projects and investments related to the development of the livestock sector. It provides an overarching framework to support the formulation of action plans and guidance documents contributing to gender equality and women’s empowerment through livestock development.
