Synopsis (short abstract) Human-induced land degradation has heavily impacted agrifood systems, pushing their productive capacity in unsustainable ways and putting at risk global food security and nutrition, environmental sustainability, and social stability. Over 60 percent of the human-induced degradation is estimated to occur on agricultural land and nearly 30 percent occurs in areas covered with trees and forests. Restoration of degraded agricultural land needs urgent political leadership, massive investments, and concerted actions. Without the restoration of agricultural land, the achievement of global targets of land degradation neutrality (LDN) and zero hunger are not possible. There are opportunities to reverse the trend and move towards more sustainable and resilient agrifood systems. Among these are focusing on the restoration of agricultural lands and investment on using suitable lands for specific crops to narrow the current yield gap.

    The project’s objective was to promote the restoration of degraded landscapes in the forest-steppe and steppe zones of Ukraine by scaling up integrated natural resources management practices. The project was particularly relevant in terms of environmental degradation and climate change, as it took important first steps towards a land degradation neutrality monitoring system and integrated land use management plans in Ukraine, thus contributing to the enhanced integration of environmental policy into governance systems.Despite challenges caused by the ongoing war, the project’s activities and incentives stand out as good practices to replicate. The project significantly implemented successful capacity building, which led to increased information sharing and the development of draft laws on environmental protection. Numerous demonstration and capacity building activities on good conservation agricultural practices and enhanced technologies like no till drill, subsurface drip irrigation, crop rotation and sustainable shelterbelt management generated greater awareness. In addition, promising income generation activities for women were implemented successfully.

    The State of Land and Water Resources (SOLAW) in the Near East and North Africa (NENA) region is part of a FAO flagship series launched in 2011. Being one of the most land and water scarce region in the world, the preservation of land and water resources is of critical importance to ensure food security and address the increased food demand. The publication aims at providing policy makers, institutions and other stakeholders a comprehensive overview of the current situation for land and water and the effect of climate change and urbanization on food production facilitating informed decision-making. The report provides the latest land and water resource statistics for the region and outlines important challenges that NENA is facing in the lead up to 2030 and beyond. It also presents positive initiatives from the region and a range of options available to help authorities respond to the issues of land and water resources.
