    Sistemele agricole și alimentare moderne au reușit să furnizeze volume mari de alimente pe piețele globale. Totuși aceste sisteme agricole, bazate pe aport extern sport și consum intens de resurse au cauzat defrișări masive, deficiențe de apă, reducerea biodiversității, epuizarea solului și niveluri ridicate de emisii de gaze cu efect de seră. În pofida unor progrese semnificative din ultima perioadă, foamea și sărăcia extremă continuă să fie provocări globale critice. Chiar și acolo unde sărăcia a fost redusă încă rămân inegalități generalizate care împiedică eradicarea completă a sărăciei. Agroecologia, ca parte integrantă a programului O Viziune Comună pentru Agricultură și Alimentație Durabilă1 a Organizației pentru Alimentație și Agricultură a Națiunilor Unite (FAO) este un element cheie al răspunsului global la această situație de instabilitate, și care oferă în același timp o abordare unică pentru a satisface creșteri semnificative ale necesităților noastre alimentare în viitor, asigurându-ne în același timp că nimeni nu este lăsat în urmă.

    Visual narratives using the 10 Elements of Agroecology can guide the holistic visioning needed to better understand transformative change and plausible transitions towards sustainable agriculture and food systems. By sharing similar underlying storylines, assumptions and responses to drivers of change, visual narratives may foster the convergence of transitions into typologies that can facilitate the design of response options to face complex sustainability challenges. This policy paper outlines how nexus analyses and visual narratives using the 10 Elements of Agroecology provide a framework for policymakers and stakeholders, including producers and their organizations, researchers, civil society and the private sector, to identify key entry points and plausible trajectories of change for agricultural and food systems transformation. By revealing interdependencies, synergies and trade-offs, visual narratives can facilitate the design of integrated and transformative policy packages. This document aims to provide policymakers and stakeholders with guidance and illustrative examples to identify, co-design and combine the most effective policies to unlock transformation in the socio-ecological and political contexts in which they are operating. Nevertheless, it does not intend to be prescriptive and should be tailored to specific circumstances, national legislation and the unique needs of each food system, following the best judgement of each policymaker and stakeholder involved.

    This study highlights the links between agroecology and climate change, by providing evidence on the technical (i.e. ecological and socio-economic) and policy potential of agroecology to build resilient food systems. The report aims to answer the following question: - How can agroecology foster climate change adaptation, mitigation and resilience through practices and policies? Inspired by the idea that transformation will only happen through a coordinated approach among all levels, this study aims to combine evidence from a broad range of backgrounds and perspectives.

    Overcoming water challenges in agriculture

    Intensifying water constraints threaten food security and nutrition. Thus, urgent action is needed to make water use in agriculture more sustainable and equitable. Irrigated agriculture remains by far the largest user of freshwater, but scarcity of freshwater is a growing problem owing to increasing demand and competition for freshwater resources. At the same time, rainfed agriculture is facing increasing precipitation variability driven by climate change. These trends will exacerbate disputes among water users and inequality in access to water, especially for small-scale farmers, the rural poor and other vulnerable populations. The State of Food and Agriculture 2020 presents new estimates on the pervasiveness of water scarcity in irrigated agriculture and of water shortages in rainfed agriculture, as well as on the number of people affected. It finds major differences across countries, and also substantial spatial variation within countries. This evidence informs a discussion of how countries may determine appropriate policies and interventions, depending on the nature and magnitude of the problem, but also on other factors such as the type of agricultural production system and countries’ level of development and their political structures. Based on this, the publication provides guidance on how countries can prioritize policies and interventions to overcome water constraints in agriculture, while ensuring efficient, sustainable and equitable access to water.

    Repurposing food and agricultural policies to make healthy diets more affordable

    This year’s report should dispel any lingering doubts that the world is moving backwards in its efforts to end hunger, food insecurity and malnutrition in all its forms. We are now only eight years away from 2030, but the distance to reach many of the SDG 2 targets is growing wider each year. There are indeed efforts to make progress towards SDG 2, yet they are proving insufficient in the face of a more challenging and uncertain context. The intensification of the major drivers behind recent food insecurity and malnutrition trends (i.e. conflict, climate extremes and economic shocks) combined with the high cost of nutritious foods and growing inequalities will continue to challenge food security and nutrition. This will be the case until agrifood systems are transformed, become more resilient and are delivering lower cost nutritious foods and affordable healthy diets for all, sustainably and inclusively.

    Climate change and food security: risks and responses 2015

    End hunger, achieve food security and improve nutrition are at the heart of the sustainable development goals. The World has committed to eradicate extreme poverty and hunger by 2030. But climate change is undermining the livelihoods and food security of the rural poor, who constitute almost 80 percent of the world’s poor. The effects of climate change on our ecosystems are already severe and widespread. Climate change brings a cascade of impacts from agroecosystems to livelihoods. Climate change impacts directly agroecosystems, which in turn has a potential impact on agricultural production, which drives economic and social impacts, which impact livelihoods. In other words, impacts translate from climate to the environment, to the productive sphere, to economic and social dimensions. Therefore, ensuring food security in the face of climate change is among the most daunting challenges facing humankind. Action is urgently needed now to reduce vulnerability and increase resilience of food systems to ensure food security and good nutrition for all.
