No results found.The aim of the Biosafety Newsletter is to provide information on Biosafety and updates of the National Biosafety Project to a cross section of the population including university academics, students, persons involved in research and development in various scientific disciplines, farmers and the general public. With regard to Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO) the potential benefits and risks to consumers of Genetically Modified (GM) products were given consideration and GMOs approved globally is highlighted in this newsletter to provide a broader understanding on global acceptance of GMOs particularly in food and agriculture. In addition, information on the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety by national and international key roles in the project from the implementing partners, Ministry of Mahaweli Development and Environment and the Food and Agriculture Organization respectively, is also highlighted in this issue. This newsletter is a forum for everyone to share their views and perceptions on Biosafety and would also be a platform to integrate everyone relevant to the field of Biosafety in Sri Lanka. -

No results found.The Biosafety newsletter January 2020, Vol 2, Issue #1 contains information about key meetings and activities that took place during the middle through latter part of 2019 in the National Biosafety Project (Implementation of the National Biosafety Framework in Accordance with the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety). The coverage of the 4th issue is dedicated to inform the audience about the progress made in relation to draft guidelines for risk assessment of living modified organisms (LMO) after the inception workshop for the risk assessment guidelines. The newsletter also mentions about the assessment of LMO detection labs, biosafety awareness for undergraduate and school children, development of the biosafety clearing house website, integrating biosafety into the education system, training of the trainers of biosafety resource persons, developing a suitable communication strategy with effective awareness material and awareness of biosafety to the health sector. The newsletter also includes synopses about biosafety in relation to improved food production, insect pest control, artificial intelligence in biosafety and a cartoon depicting the information related to modern biotechnology, LMOs and biosafety.

No results found.The Newsletter is an initiative by the National Biosafety Project (Implementation of the National Biosafety Framework in Accordance with the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety). This project is implemented by the Ministry of Mahaweli Development and Environment and the Food and Agriculture Organization. This newsletter will be a platform for experts, the academia and students to share scientific findings and perceptions on Biosafety. This newsletter which will be in English, Sinhalese and Tamil will provide awareness on Biosafety which is important with regard to the production of Genetically Modified Organisms including Genetically Modified plants to increase crop productivity and value addition to products. In addition the benefits of Genetically Modified products in the Pharmaceutical industry and in human health are also included in the newsletter
