    The most important agricultural systems such as Pomegranate, Pistachio, and Saffron farming systems are irrigated by Qanat. The geographical regions around the Central Desert of Iran which is also one of the most traditional agricultural areas have been using the Qanat technology for providing water for agriculture and human consumption for thousands of years. The Qanat Irrigation technology and related knowledge system have developed in Iran as early as 800 BC and the Kashan region is the land of one of the oldest human habitat in Iran and is also one of the origins of Persian agricultural civilization irrigated by Qanat system.

    Soil erosion from both wind and water as well as soil salinity have caused extensive land degradation in the Islamic Republic of Iran. In addition, an overconsumption of natural resources, water scarcity and ineffective policies and management practices have exacerbated the land degradation and led to a decline in biodiversity. To tackle these issues, this project focused on the promotion of Sustainable Land and Forest Management (SLFM) practices among local communities and institutions. Its design included four main elements: capacity development, participatory planning, policy integration and awareness-raising activities.

    To implement the project Improved Agriculture Monitoring Systems through Satellite Imagery for Iran, three parts of the country were selected as pilot areas: Zanjan and Mazandaran provinces, and south Kerman region. For each area, some basic information was obtained, including crop calendars, statistics on the status of major agricultural products, political boundaries, land use, and land cover maps and climatic Agro-Ecological Zone (AEZ) maps. This poster shows the mapped province of Mazandaran. The process for developing it started from Sentinel-2 satellite images (period: 1 Jan- 31 Dec 2017). Preprocessing was performed using SNAp software. The NDVI was then calculated for each image for 12 months of the year. The map includes orchards, irrigated lands, water bodies, rangelands, and bare-area classes.

    Global Forest Resources Assessment 2020

    FAO completed its first assessment of the world’s forest resources in 1948. At that time, its major objective was to collect information on available timber supply to satisfy post-war reconstruction demand. Since then, the Global Forest Resources Assessment (FRA) has evolved into a comprehensive evaluation of forest resources and their condition, management and uses, covering all the thematic elements of sustainable forest management. This, the latest of these assessments, examines the status of, and trends in, forest resources over the period 1990–2020, drawing on the efforts of hundreds of experts worldwide. The production of FRA 2020 also involved collaboration among many partner organizations, thereby reducing the reporting burden on countries, increasing synergies among reporting processes, and improving data consistency. The results of FRA 2020 are available in several formats, including this report and an online database containing the original inputs of countries and territories as well as desk studies and regional and global analyses prepared by FAO. I invite you to use these materials to support our common journey towards a more sustainable future with forests.

    The State of the World’s Animal Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture 2007
    The wise management of the world’s agricultural biodiversity is becoming an ever greater challenge for the international community. The livestock sector in particular is undergoing dramatic changes as large-scale production expands in response to surging demand for meat, milk and eggs. A wide portfolio of animal genetic resources is crucial to adapting and developing our agricultural production systems. Climate change and the emergence of new and virulent animal diseases underline the need to re tain this adaptive capacity. For hundreds of millions of poor rural households, livestock remain a key asset, often meeting multiple needs, and enabling livelihoods to be built in some of the world’s harshest environments. Livestock production makes a vital contribution to food and livelihood security, and to meeting the United Nations Millennium Development Goals. It will be of increasing significance in the coming decades. And yet, genetic diversity is under threat. The reported rate of breed extinctions is of great concern, but it is even more worrying that unrecorded genetic resources are being lost before their characteristics can be studied and their potential evaluated. Strenuous efforts to understand, prioritize and protect the world’s animal genetic resources for food and agriculture are required. Sustainable patterns of utilization must be established. Traditional livestock keepers – often poor and in marginal environments – have been the stewards of much of our animal geneti c diversity. We should not ignore their role or neglect their needs. Equitable arrangements for benefit-sharing are needed, and broad access to genetic resources must be ensured. An agreed international framework for the management of these resources is crucial.

    This report aims to provide a conceptual framework to address food security under conditions of water scarcity in agriculture. It has been prepared by a team of FAO staff and consultants in the framework of the project `Coping with water scarcity: the role of agriculture?, and has been discussed at an Expert Consultation meeting organized in FAO, Rome in December 2009 on the same subject. It was subsequently edited and revised, taking account of discussions in the Expert Consultation and materia ls presented to the meeting. The document offers views on the conceptual framework on which FAO's water scarcity programme should be based, proposes a set of definitions associated with the concept of water scarcity, and indicates the main principles on which FAO should base its action in support to its member countries.
