Synopsis (short abstract) On 14 May 2023, cyclone Mocha made landfall in Myanmar, accompanied by violent gusts, torrential rainfall and flooding. Mocha caused significant disruption to the lives and livelihoods of more than 40 percent of farming households in Ayeyarwady, Chin, Kachin, Magway and Sagaing, and more than 80 percent in Rakhine. The climate-induced disaster struck some of the most vulnerable rural communities at a time when they were already grappling with a growing food security crisis. In line with Cyclone Mocha Flash Appeal, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) aims to scale up emergency livelihoods support to the most vulnerable rural households in the affected areas. The document provides an overview of the potential impact of Mocha on agriculture and food security as well as FAO's planned response and urgent funding requirements.

    On 26 May 2024, Cyclone Remal struck Bangladesh, unleashing severe floods and landslides across several districts. It was the most devastating cyclone to hit the country in over a decade, causing widespread damage to agricultural livelihoods and resulting in considerable losses to household income. In light of this situation, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations seeks to support cyclone- and flood-affected households by providing agricultural production inputs and rehabilitating rural productive infrastructures. This support is crucial to help the affected communities restore food production, rebuild their livelihoods and strengthen their resilience to withstand future shocks.

    Myanmar earthquake: Urgent call for assistance 2025

    The 7.7 magnitude earthquake that struck central Myanmar on 28 March 2025 caused widespread devastation across key agricultural regions, severely disrupting rural livelihoods and food production systems. The disaster impacted cropland, livestock assets, irrigation infrastructure and food storage facilities and compounded existing vulnerabilities in communities already affected by instability and food insecurity. With the monsoon planting season approaching, disruptions to agricultural inputs and markets threaten to worsen the crisis. In support of humanitarian response efforts, FAO is seeking USD 8.3 million to assist 71 000 people through time-critical interventions, including the provision of agricultural inputs, financial assistance and the rehabilitation of damaged rural infrastructure. This document provides an overview of the impact of the earthquake on agriculture-based livelihoods, FAO’s planned response and funding requirements. The targets and funding outlined in this document are additional to FAO’s goal of assisting 400 000 people under the 2025 Myanmar Humanitarian Needs and Response Plan, which requires USD 28.5 million.

    Between January and March 2023, Tropical Cyclone Freddy – the most energetic cyclone on record – and Tropical Storm Cheneso battered Malawi, Madagascar and Mozambique. At the same time, Zambia experienced destructive storms and torrential rains that resulted in severe flooding, affecting large swaths of inhabited and cropped lands. Critical social and economic infrastructure, fisheries equipment, livestock and hundreds of thousands of hectares of crops have been lost. As a result of these climate shocks, the crop production, food security, nutrition and livelihoods of some of the most vulnerable households have been severely jeopardized. Urgent assistance is needed rapidly to restore agricultural production.
