Policy briefScaling up investments in agrifood systems for youth in Africa
What policymakers need to know
2022This investment brief highlights the importance of youth as change agents and key stakeholders contributing to sustainable agrifood systems. It provides an overview of the Investment guidelines for youth in agrifood systems in Africa developed jointly by FAO and the African Union Commission through a multi-stakeholder and participatory process. The guidelines aim to accelerate investments in and by youth in agrifood systems by providing practical guidance, including tools and examples, to design, develop, implement, monitor and evaluate youth-focused and youth-sensitive investment programmes and to engage youth fully as partners throughout the entire process. The brief calls for wide dissemination of the guidelines, capacity building of relevant stakeholders to apply them at national and local levels, and concerted and coordinated action to reach these goals. -

However, insecurity, climate change, the rise of violent extremism, the erosion of social cohesion and the lack of economic and employment opportunities, are some of the major challenges faced in the region. The regional forum ‘’Building resilience and social cohesion of Sahelian youth through their inclusion in agrifood systems was organized by the FAO in collaboration with the G5 Sahel Secretariat and technically supported by the Mauritania Investment Promotion Agency (APIM), International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), International Labour Organization (ILO) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). This guidance note presents the proceedings and deliberations agreed at the regional forum while highlighting priorities for young people’s most urgent needs in order to facilitate social cohesion and their inclusion in the rural development of their territories while identifying existing opportunities to strengthen youth inclusion in agrifood systems. -

No results found.Women and youth-led agri-enterprises (WYE) (which may also be operating as family businesses) in agricultural value chains have been identified as catalysts for rural transformation given their potential for creating employment and stimulating value addition both on and off-farm. Given that agriculture and food systems are likely to remain the key generators of employment in Ghana over the coming decades, and that 80% of all activities in the midstream of food value chain are undertaken by SMEs in Africa. It is very much necessary to generate the evidence to support the argument that family, women and youth-led agribusinesses have a key role to play in the rural transformation pathway underway in Ghana.
