Synopsis (short abstract) Kattumaram logs have a relatively short service life because of rotand subsequent water absorption. The logs are also subject to high wear and tear due to frequent beaching and alternate wetting and drying. Melia Dubia and Albizzia Molluccana are two log species from Sri Lanka most preferred for the making of kattumarams. Due to their non-availability and the depletion of sources of similar timber from Kerala forests, there has been a steep rise in the prices of logs. Hence the need for ways to lengthen the life and lower the cost of the traditional type of kattumaram logs. Increase of Service Life: Both chemical and physical means in the form of Copper Chrome Arsenic compounds (ASCU), coal-tar creosote and reinforced plastic sheathing, have been identified to increase the service life of kattumaram logs. Specifications for treatment have been recommended. Investment Reduction: Ten different species of timber abundantly available in the Andaman forests have been identified as substitutes for the traditional timber species. Two in particular — “Didu” and ‘White Dhup” — have been recommended for trials.

    During the second half of 1979 and the first quarter of 1980 a survey was carried out in some fishing villages of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, to obtain information on the types of kattumarams used on the East Coast of India, the kinds of fishing gear used with the kattumaram, the methods of operation, catches and costs. This working paper presents the results of the survey. The text and the photographs give a brief summary of kattumaram types and their economic importance. A comprehensiv e pictorial record of the kattumaram types is also available. For those requiring more detailed data on materiats, construction, fishing gear, operations and costs, a comprehensive record of the information obtained during the survey is to be found in the appendices. The survey was carried out by Mr. T. R. Menon, Chief Instructor (Craft and Gear), Central Institute of Fisheries, Nautical and Engineering Training (CIFNET), Cochin. He was deputed to the Bay of Bengal Programme during July-S eptember 1979 and in March 1980. The Bay of Bengal Programme and FAO express their gratitude to the Government of India, Ministry of Agriculture, and to the Director of CIFNET for making Mr. Menons services available to carry out the work.

    This paper describes eight new prototypes of beachlanding craft developed by the small-scale fisheries project of the Bay of Bengal Programme (BOBP). It also describes the technical trials of the craft with emphasis on surf crossing abilities. This working paper is a sequel to BOBP/WP/7, “Technical Trials of Beachcraft Prototypes in India” which described BOBP’s first trials of four prototypes.

    This paper summaries a study on the availability and prices of materials used to construct the hulls of fishing craft for the important small-scale fisheries of the East Coast of India. The paper should be of interest to development planners, legislators and administrators. Builders of fishing craft, suppliers of materials, and owners and prospective owners of fishing craft may also find useful the information on trends in prices and availability of boatbuilding materials and the possibilities o f alternative materials. The study covered the following boatbuilding materials: timber for kattumarams and boats; fibre-reinforced plastics; ferrocement; steel; and aluminium, which is used forsheathing wooden hulls and is also a construction material in its own right. The study was carried out by Matsyasagar Consultancy Services Private Limited under contract to the Programme for the Development of Small-Scale Fisheries in the Bay of Bengal, GCP/RAS/040/SWE (usually abbreviated to th e Bay of Bengal Programme). The Programme is executed by the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) and funded by the Swedish International Development Authority (SIDA). The main aims of the Bay of Bengal Programme are to develop and demonstrate technologies by which the conditions of small-scale fishermen and the supply of fish from the small-scale sector may be improved, in five of the countries bordering the Bay of Bengal — Bangladesh, India, Malaysia, Sri Lanka an d Thailand.
