Synopsis (short abstract) The Global Workshop on Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) and Inland Fisheries, organized by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), was held in Entebbe, Uganda, 18–20 March 2025. The workshop brought together 38 participants from 20 countries – including representatives from basin management organizations (BMOs), regional fishery bodies (RFBs), national agencies, and technical experts – to support the integration of inland fisheries into basin-level planning and water governance.Building on prior work by FAO and its partners, the event served as a platform to review and refine a draft intersectoral methodology for integrated basin assessment and management with the aim of aligning inland fisheries with broader land, water and ecosystem management efforts. Participants also reviewed six pilot project proposals from major basins in Africa, Asia and Latin America, providing targeted feedback to enhance cross-sectoral collaboration, participatory planning and implementation feasibility. The workshop concluded with a set of agreed next steps, including finalizing pilot proposals, updating the methodology, mobilizing resources, and sustaining collaboration through a multistakeholder steering committee. This report summarizes the workshop’s outcomes and key lessons, as well as a forward-looking roadmap for embedding inland fisheries within IWRM, intersectoral basin governance and broader agrifood system transformation strategies.

    Small-scale fisheries in inland waters are particularly important for supporting local communities, providing livelihoods, and ensuring food security, especially in rural areas along or around existing water basins. However, these food systems are vulnerable to stressors such as pollution, habitat loss and degradation, draining wetlands, river fragmentation and poor land management. Indeed, there is potential to increase synergies between these different sectors using “integrated water resources management” (IWRM). There are currently no global or regional frameworks between regional fishery bodies (RFBs) and basin management organizations (BMOs) in place to exploit synergies between inland fisheries and other water use sectors. Consequently, the overall objective of the first global workshop between RFBs and BMOs, held in Entebbe, Uganda from 6 to 8 December 2023 was to promote, discuss and establish an effective cooperation framework between BMOs and RFBs and to develop concerted approaches to integrate inland fisheries management into basin management, in the context of climate change, water scarcity, food security and ecosystem health. The workshop report will share the outcomes from this workshop which resulted in a consensus on the importance of employing multidisciplinary approaches, recognizing their value and the imperative need for such strategies.

    The Symposium on Water for Sustainable Inland Fisheries and Aquaculture was held in Praia do Carvoeiro, Portugal, from 23-26 June 1998, in concomitance with the Twentieth Session of the European Inland Fisheries Advisory Commission (EIFAC). Sixty eight participants from 23 countries attended the symposium; 27 papers and 6 posters were presented. The Symposium concluded that those in charge of fisheries and aquaculture development should seek collaboration with other agencies and sectors of socie ty in order to improve coordination of water resource management and to ensure that the needs of inland fisheries and aquaculture are adequately represented in management plans. An urgent requirement would be an economic and social evaluation of inland fisheries, aquaculture production, fishing communities, fish populations and aquatic environments in general.
