Brochure, flyer, fact-sheetAGRICULTURE AND INTERCULTURAL DIALOGUE it’s our common heritage 2005Civilization is founded on agriculture, which remains as important today as 10 000 years ago when it was born. When early hunter-gatherers settled in groups and domesticated wild crops and animals, society began to evolve rapidly. Some community members specialized in producing food, freeing others to invent ways of spinning and weaving, smelting and casting of bronze, baking bricks, shaping clay on the potter’s wheel and writing. Villages grew into towns and eventually into cities. To examine the true worth of agriculture today and to celebrate the ongoing contribution of different cultures to global agriculture, FAO has chosen “Agriculture and intercultural dialogue” as the theme of World Food Day 2005. This year’s observance will also mark the 60th anniversary of the Organization’s founding.

No results found. The Second Dialogue on Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems (GIAHS) in Europe and Central Asia aimed to promote the GIAHS Programme in the region, raising awareness on the potentiality of participating in the dynamic conservation of these sites. Speakers from all around the region discussed about traditional agricultural systems, bringing the experience of existing sites at different stages of recognition and potential ones that are still in the process of identification. The post-pandemic's prediction led the virtual meeting the opportunity to talk about resilience and vulnerability of these sites both to climate change and economic crises. Experts discussed about the importance and the ways of achieving economic diversification of local agricultural practices, the creation of a sustainable agrotourism network and the promotion of market access for the agricultural local products. During the Dialogue, representatives had the chance to discuss about their sites’ priorities and the challenges faced by member countries in the region: one of the most important objectives of this meeting was to outline the new Regional Strategy for the Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems (GIAHS) in Europe and Central Asia for 2021-2025. -

No results found. This is the third edition of the “Summary of the World Food and Agricultural Statistics”, a publication which arose following a request of the FAO Director-General to compile a broad range of statistics pertaining to world food and agriculture. These statistics show, wherever appropriate, the differences between the developed and developing countries, the continents and the regions. Initially the related tables were compiled and regularly updated for the personal use of the Director-Gene ral. However, as the information presented has become of more general interest, it has been decided to publish the tables in the form of a document. It is hoped that managers and policy makers dealing in international issues relating to food and agriculture will find the document useful. The tables are organized in sets corresponding to 10 sections entitled as follows: 1) Agriculture Macro-Economic Indicators 2) Population and Labour Force 3) Land Use and Agricultural Inputs 4) W ater Resources and Irrigation 5) Agricultural Production and Trade 6) Forestry Production and Trade 7) Fishery Production and Trade 8) Food Nutrition and Food Security 9) Projections 10) Selected Food and Agricultural Indicators by Country
