    The FAO is implementing a project entitled “Sustainable Cropland and forest management in priority agro-ecosystems of Myanmar (SLM-GEF)” in coordination with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation (MoNREC) and the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation (MoALI) with funding from the Global Environment Facility (GEF). The project promotes climate smart agriculture (CSA) policies and practices at different levels in Myanmar. One of the key activities of the project is to establish a national CSA/SLM training program mainstreaming CSA/SLM in the agriculture related academic courses and trainings conducted by Yezin Agricultural University (YAU), State Agricultural Institutes (SAI), Department of Agriculture (DoA) and Department of Agriculture Research (DAR).  In order to integrate CSA within the research, extension, training and development programs, the project has made efforts to revise/develop the curricula integrating CSA topics for example: i) CSA component integrated into the Masters and Bachelor level courses on Agriculture at YAU;  ii) CSA component integrated into the Diploma in Agriculture course at SAIs; iii) one month training on CSA together with other subjects for the in-service or refresher course at Central Agriculture Research and Training Centre (CARTC) under DoA and iv) one week intensive Training of Trainers (ToT) programme aiming for the researchers, extension agents and teachers of DoA, DAR and YAU. This curriculum for one-month inservice or refresher course training will serve as the main reference document for trainers (professors/lectureres/teachers/Extension Workers/Researchers) from the different relevant organisations to include the related topics on CSA into their courses for teaching.

    The effects of climate change and climate variability on agriculture pose the greatest challenge for Kenya to realize its Vision 2030 and other agricultural strategies. Agriculture is sensitive and highly vulnerable to climate change/variability, whose effects are already being experienced in life threatening ways. Given the high dependency on rain-fed agriculture, people and communities whose livelihoods is conditional on agricultural sector are at higher risk of climatic extremes. This manual has been prepared to assist agricultural extension officers and community leaders in disseminating a list of Climate-Smart Agriculture practices. These set of practices when implemented in an integrated approach should ensure increased production and profitability, enhance resilience and adaptation to climate change effects but also promote low greenhouse gas emission. Though the list of practices are not exhaustive, the manual attempt to demonstrate possible effective combination of practices that are suitable for most of the Kenyan farming systems and which simultaneously achieve a farming approach that is productive, adaptive and with opportunities for carbon sinks. Each chapter describes a Climate-Smart Agriculture practice and tries to respond to the three questions of proposed technologies i.e. What?, Why? and How? The format of writing was intended to make it easy for the users to be able to apply the synergistic implementation of selected practices. This manual will be complemented by other manuals and policy guidelines prepared by FAO and the Government of Kenya to support policy makers in integrating climate change concerns in other development areas while achieving food and nutrition security

    In the context of sustainable agricultural development, agricultural extension has a very crucial role to play. The tasks and responsibilities of extension service will need to be broadbased and holistic in contents and scope, thus beyond agricultural technology transfer. Its normal task of transferring and disseminating to farmers appropriate agricultural technologies and good farm practices would not be sufficient. Extension agencies, services, and workers will need to exercise a more proactive and participatory role and serve as knowledge/information "brokers", initiating and facilitating mutually meaningful and equitable knowledge-based transactions among agricultural researchers, trainers, and primary producers. To improve its cost-effectiveness, proper strategies to advocate favorable and explicit agricultural extension policies are needed. Modern strategic planning and quality management tools and approaches should be utilized in developing or restructuring extension organizations or institutions. More innovative methods must be developed to identify systematically farmer’s problems and felt needs, and to help formulate and set agricultural research agenda based on such needs and problems. In short, there is a need to develop and improve the conceptual, technical, and operational methods and tools in order to strategically plan, efficiently manage, and scientifically evaluate a problem-solving, demand-driven and needs-based agricultural extension program. This manual is a practical guide for extension workers in agriculture. It contains simple, easy to follow tools on the commonly used extension methods and an outline of how extension may be planned and implemented.
