Synopsis (short abstract) L’Iraq se trouve de nouveau dans une situation humanitaire précaire en raison de l’escalade récente du conflit armé. De longues années d’instabilité avaient provoqué des crises humanitaires prolongées et une importante dégradation tant de l’accès aux services essentiels que de la qualité de ces derniers. Malgré les quelques progrès enregistrés ces dernières années, qui avaient permis de limiter les pénuries alimentaires, l’insécurité civile, la perturbation des marchés, la faiblesse des revenus et le manque d’accès à des quantités suffisantes de nourriture restent les principales causes de l’insécurité alimentaire en Iraq. Le système de distribution publique est toujours la principale source de nourriture pour les Iraquiens pauvres, bien que d’après les rapports, le taux de dépendance ait diminué, passant de 67 pour cent en 2007 à 57 pour cent en 2011.

    Iraq has been plunged into a renewed precarious humanitarian situation with the current escalation of armed conflict. Already the long years of instability have led to protracted humanitarian crises and significant deterioration of both accessibility and the quality of essential services. Although some gains were registered in the last several years in containing food deprivation, civil insecurity, disruptions of markets, limited income and lack of access to sufficient food continue to be the ma in causes of food insecurity in Iraq. The Public Distribution System (PDS) remains the main source of food for the poorest Iraqis although the rate of dependency was reported to have decreased from 67 percent in 2007 to 57 percent in 2011.

    To mitigate the impacts of climate-induced risks on the livelihoods of wheat farmers, the Government of the Kingdom of Belgium contributed USD 625 000 through FAO's Special Fund for Emergency and Rehabilitation Activities (SFERA). With this generous contribution, FAO will provide 1 130 vulnerable farming households in Diwaniyah, Erbil and Kirkuk with 226 tonnes of drought-tolerant wheat seed and 169.5 tonnes of fertilizer. Additionally, the project will train national extension service staff and the targeted beneficiaries on climate-smart irrigation management and good agricultural practices. This document provides a brief description of the current context of the intervention and highlights the importance of the contribution in enhancing the resilience of flood-affected communities.
