Synopsis (short abstract) This is one of the seven sector analyses (Meat and Dairy; Fruit and vegetables; Cereals; Wine; Diversification, Fishery and Aquaculture, and Forestry) that have been prepared since spring 2011 for the agricultural authorities in Bosnia and Herzegovina at state, entity and Brčko District level. The sector analyses are inputs to the design of measures to be financed under the European Union (EU) Instrument for Pre-accession Assistance for Rural Development (IPARD), once available, as well as for t he design of the country’s policies interventions in general.     In Bosnia and Herzegovina wheat is a key staple, yet domestic production is small and low quality. Current policy environment tends to disadvantage wheat producers and makes them vulnerable in face of changing climate. Government interventions should focus on improving competitiveness of wheat producers and building resilience to climate change. Key reforms should encompass land consolidation, on-farm investments, access to high quality inputs and equipment, extension services and access to risk management tools.

    This publication, one of the main documentation outputs of the FAO Technical Cooperation Programme (TCP) Project TCP/BIH/3101 “Strengthening Aquaculture Health Management in Bosnia and Herzegovina” contains, a series of seven contributed papers with useful information on the development and current status of aquaculture and aquatic animal health in Bosnia and Herzegovina. These papers were presented by national and international consultants during the various training/workshops that we re undertaken during project implementation. The topics include: project overview and highlights of implementation, development of national policy and strategy for aquaculture, European Union animal health requirements for aquacultured animals and their products, status of national aquaculture development, aquatic animal health surveillance and disease control system in Bosnia and Herzegovina and national health status of aquatic animals and aquacultured fish and fishery product qualit y and safety in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

    This report aims to highlight the current strengths of the institutional disaster risk reduction (DRR) system for agriculture in Bosnia and Herzegovina as well as indicate existing gaps and capacity needs to further enhance it. A comprehensive assessment is conducted, which includes a general overview of the country’s agricultural sector and outlines the most frequent natural hazards that are impacting the sector. It is followed by an analysis of the existing legal, policy and institutional structure and discusses various components of the system, including e.g. the functioning of early warning systems, assessments of disaster risks, post-disaster needs assessments, including damages and losses assessments and the availability of agricultural insurance for farmers.
