No results found. The present report includes the results of the consultancy for the Pilot Project for Coastal Shrimp Culture (MOZ/86/033), carried out in January-February 1991. The terms of reference were to determine: the profitability of shrimp culture under national conditions; the planning and programming of a data bank for bio-economic information; an evaluation and financial analysis of the project investment; and to offer recommendations on cost reduction, and training of project staff. Shrimp culture in Mozambique has been identified as a priority within the country's Rehabilitation Economic Plan, due to the potential of more than 33 000 ha. Marine culture as new sources of employment and income can also contribute to improve the existing socio-economic conditions. The consultant undertook the following activities: analysis of the production in technology; establishment of an information system on costs, corresponding to the local conditions; training of project staff. An analysis of co sts and income by hectare of ponds was prepared for each production system, as well as the financial evaluation of the investment. To give a comprehensive view of the opportunities for development of shrimp culture, the report contains the following information: possible benefits deriving from project results in the area of Maputo; a review of the present status, potential, institutional structure, aquaculture legislation, investment conditions, fiscal and customs incentives, credit and fiscal politics. The report provides preliminary conclusions and recommendations on production systems, planning, regulations, as well as organization and training of human resources in marine aquaculture.
