The project’s objective was to promote the restoration of degraded landscapes in the forest-steppe and steppe zones of Ukraine by scaling up integrated natural resources management practices. The project was particularly relevant in terms of environmental degradation and climate change, as it took important first steps towards a land degradation neutrality monitoring system and integrated land use management plans in Ukraine, thus contributing to the enhanced integration of environmental policy into governance systems.Despite challenges caused by the ongoing war, the project’s activities and incentives stand out as good practices to replicate. The project significantly implemented successful capacity building, which led to increased information sharing and the development of draft laws on environmental protection. Numerous demonstration and capacity building activities on good conservation agricultural practices and enhanced technologies like no till drill, subsurface drip irrigation, crop rotation and sustainable shelterbelt management generated greater awareness. In addition, promising income generation activities for women were implemented successfully.

Azerbaijan is located in the southern Caucasus, with mountains covering 47 percent of the country. Rapid development as a result of the oil boom has led to a decrease in poverty, but numerous sites are highly polluted with derived contaminants. To lessen its economy’s dependence on the oil sector, the acceleration of agriculture development is a major national strategic policy. Water scarcity represents a limitation for agricultural productivity causing degradation problems particularly severe and affecting the most vulnerable such as rural communities and smallholder farmers. Most of the population live in either rain-fed areas with high drought frequency or irrigated areas with high water stress, and severe land degradation is affecting their livelihoods.

During COP 13, the Global Mechanism of the UNCCD and FAO strengthened their collaborative efforts to support Small Island Developing States (SIDS) to set national targets to achieve LDN. The purpose was to identify lessons learned from the LDN target setting process in SIDS in order to generate recommendations to policy makers and interested stakeholders on future actions and to consider cross-cutting issues and linkages between emerging and existing challenges and priorities. This briefing note presents an overview of these recommendations.
