Synopsis (short abstract) 2011 年に発行した出版物「Save and Grow」において、FAO は高い生 産性と環境的持続性を両立させた集約的作物生産の新しいパラダイムを 提唱しました。FAO は、過去半世紀において、投入材の集約的な利用 に基づく農業が、世界の食料生産と1 人当たり平均消費量を押し上げてきたことを認 識しています。しかしながら、こうした農業は、多くの農業生態系の天然資源を消耗さ せ、将来の生産性を脅かし、気候変動の原因となる温室効果ガスの排出を増加させて きました。さらに、慢性的な栄養不足人口を大幅に削減するまでには至らず、今も8 億7,000 万人にのぼっています。 食料の生産・消費を、真に持続的な基盤の上に位置づけることが課題となっています。 世界人口は、2050 年までに現在の70 億人から92 億人に増加すると予想されており、 この傾向が続けば世界の食料生産を60％増加させる必要があります。良好なポテン シャルを持った未利用地が減少していることを考慮すると、この需要を満たすにはこれ まで以上に高い収量が求められます。同時にこの増収は、土地と水に対する高まる競 合、上昇する燃料・肥 料価格、気候変動の影響に直面する中で実現されなければなり ません。

The system builds up soil nutrient stocks, and produces maize yields double those of traditional shifting cultivation.It reduces the time needed for land preparation, prevents soil erosion, and improves the supply and quality of water for downstream consumers. Many ‘slash-and-mulch’ farmers have diversified production, primarily into home ga rdens and livestock. The system enhances ecosystem services, including carbon sequestration, and reduces methane emissions.
