Synopsis (short abstract) To assess potential priority areas for improving access to water for rice production in eastern Terai, rainfed and irrigated cropland were mapped at 5m spatial resolution (using 2022 Planet, Sentinel–1, Sentinel–2 and vegetation index using SEPAL1. Population data (NBS–2021) and cropland data were combined to form an indicator to help identify areas with a potentially high number of people to benefit from increased access to water.

    Cropland information is required to monitor food security indicators and provide information on access to water, cropping intensities etc. Cropland data are prepared in context of GEF–8 projects and are obtained by training a machine learning model and classifying 2022 satellite imageries in SEPAL. The main aim of the GEF–8 project is to transform rice fields to improve the region's food security.

The data was combined with population data, obtained from the Central Bureau of Statistics, Nepal (2021) to generate cropland per capita. The main aim of the GEF–8 project is to transform rice fields to improve the region's food security.

    Flooding in the lowlands of Nepal is common. To assess the hazards to food security in eastern terai, flood occurrence for 2017-2022 and people’s exposure to flood are calculated. Cropland data is obtained from the land cover of Nepal (2019) and flood occurrence from a change detection approach using Sentinel-1 (SAR) data. The population data are obtained from the Central Bureau of Statistics (2021), Nepal.
