    Flooding in the lowlands of Nepal is common. To assess the hazards to food security in eastern terai, flood occurrence for 2017-2022 and people’s exposure to flood are calculated. Cropland data is obtained from the land cover of Nepal (2019) and flood occurrence from a change detection approach using Sentinel-1 (SAR) data. The population data are obtained from the Central Bureau of Statistics (2021), Nepal.

    Land cover data is fundamental to food security. Land cover information is required to monitor food security indicators, and provide information on access to water, cropping intensities and many others. Land cover for eastern Terai is obtained in the context of GEF–8 projects from the national land cover of Nepal (2019), and the legend is also available in Land Cover Legend Registry (LCLR) of FAO, which describes land cover classes. The main aim of the GEF–8 project is to transform rice fields to improve the region’s food security.

    Cropland information is required to monitor food security indicators and provide information on access to water, cropping intensities etc. Cropland data are prepared in context of GEF–8 projects and are obtained by training a machine learning model and classifying 2022 satellite imageries in SEPAL. The main aim of the GEF–8 project is to transform rice fields to improve the region's food security.
