Indicators to assess the contributions of forests, trees, and agroforestry to food security and nutrition at national level

    Economic contribution of the forest sector is commonly downplayed by only considering its direct impacts while overlooking the ripple effects on other sectors of the economy. This lack of recognition often puts the forest sector in a less favorable position in developing national development strategy and impedes unlocking the sector’s full potential towards sustainable development. This study used three case studies (Finland, Malawi, and the United States of America) to illustrate how the forest sector contributed to national economies through direct, indirect, and induced effects. It identifies and quantifies how the forest sector is linked to other sectors of the economy via backward and forward linkages, and compares the structure of the sectoral linkages across the three studied countries. A structural path analysis approach based on social accounting matrices was used for the analysis. The forest sector was found having a promising potential to contribute to national economies through direct contribution and pathways via other sectors. The forest sector’s indirect and induced effects were found higher than its direct effects in terms of employment, valued added, and labour income. Wood-based processing subsectors in general had higher economic multipliers than the forestry and logging subsector. The real estate, wholesale trade, and food sectors were among the top backward-linked sectors of the forest sector and the construction sector was among the top forward-linked sectors for all three countries. There were great variations in how the forest sector interacts with other sectors among the studied countries. Stage of development, resource endowments, forest tenure, geo-economics, positions in international trade, and national forest policy all played some roles. The results can advance our understanding of the sectoral linkages of the forest sector in national economy and provide thoughts on how to weave the forest sector into national development strategies in a holistic way.     Satellite remote sensing-based forest resources assessment methods for effective management and sustainable development of forests by generation of information on forests and trees outside forest cover

    Satellite based remote sensing methods have proved to be an effective and scientifically proven method for managing and conserving forest data and resources at periodic time intervals. The forest resources monitoring methods provide useful data to forest managers for sustainable forest management at different scale and forest management units. Over the years the scientific management of forest have been a subject globally discussed incorporating the role of environmentalist, conservationist and communities associated with the forest. It has been an unhidden fact that forests have suffered tremendous pressure in developing countries on the pretext of development. It is through effective monitoring and communication of forest information and knowledge that the concerned provincial governments are forced to take remedial measures for protecting the forests. Apart from the government owned forests, termed as Recorded Forest Areas(RFA) in India, Trees outside forests(TOF) are well acknowledged as an important component of forest resources. The ToF, which basically exist as block, linear and scattered plantations on earth are captured using LISS-III sensor of Indian Remote Sensing Satellite. For the national level scale mapping, all patches of area 1hectare and above are considered for estimation. For mapping of ToF patches of size between 0.1-1hectare, high resolution data from LISSIV sensor(5.8metres resolution) is analyzed. It has been now a well-established fact that trees outside RFAs, although in small proportion, contribute significantly to forest conservation and meeting the demand of people towards minor forest produce, firewood etc. The exercise on forest change detection using a hybrid method, is effective in identification of significant forest change. The assessment of forests and ToFs using satellite data and advance image processing tools may be helpful in effective management and long term sustainability of forests in developing countries.     Non-timber forest products – A key tool to improve food security and nutrition in the drylands of Africa

    Desertification and climate change will reduce the provision of ecosystem services in African drylands, including losses in biodiversity and soil fertility. With a major part of the population in these areas relying heavily on natural resources for survival, this worsens a health situation that is already ridden by hunger & malnutrition. Tree Aid works in Africa’s drylands to unlock the potential of trees to tackle poverty and food security while improving the environment. In particular, the promotion of non-timber forest products (NTFPs) can improve the health of rural populations by enhancing food security and nutrition. Here, we present a quantitative study that explores the impacts of promoting the production and consumption of NTFPs among 33,212 households in four regions of Burkina Faso, which feature the highest malnutrition rates in the country. This project was a partnership between Tree Aid and the Swiss Development Agency and ran from January 2017 to December 2020. Its socioeconomic and nutritional impacts were evaluated with baseline & endline assessments using the Rural Household Multi Indicator Survey1 (RHoMIS), a well-established household survey tool designed to analyse farm systems, a nutritional survey using SMART technology (Standardized Monitoring and Assessment of Relief and Transitions2 ) & focus group discussions. We find that enhancing access of women and vulnerable groups to wild & cultivated NTFPs through nutrition gardens & raising awareness of their nutritional value improves the food and nutritional security of the project rural households. Overall, the 263% increase in the proportion of calories sourced from key NTFPs (shea and baobab), which tripled daily intake per person, contributed to an 8% reduction in the number of households below the calorie line and a 42% reduction in chronic malnutrition in under 5-year-olds. These results reinforce the case for protecting & regenerating forests, which bring significant benefits to human health for rural population across the Sahel.
