Synopsis (short abstract) The fish loss assessment methodology outlined by the Save Food Programme (FAO 2014) and with reference to earlier work by Ward & Jeffries (2000) and Diei-Ouadi Y, Mgawe Y I (2011) had been used to undertake assessments in different locations in Java where focus on particular fishing gears, fish species and products. These were major Fishery Products (focused on squid) in Muara Angke Fishing Port, North Jakarta, DKI Jakarta; Gillnet fisheries in Tegal, Central Java; Gillnet fisheries Gunung Kidul , Yogyakarta and Small Pelagic Processed Fish in Brondong, East Java selected for their role in terms of general fish supply/food security, employment, and indication of prevalence of gillnet fisheries. The objective was to develop an up-to-date and detailed understanding of different types of losses affecting food security and stakeholders’ livelihoods.

    This document contains the report of the situational analysis of post-harvest systems in the Volta Basin riparian countries, and presents proposals for interventions aimed to strengthen their efficiency, competitiveness and sustainability. This report summarizes the main activities implemented under the NEPAD–FAO Fish Programme (Support to the Implementation of the Strategy for Fisheries and Aquaculture in Africa-NFFP), focusing particularly on how its Output B4 “Mechanisms established for impro ving the performance of the fisheries and aquaculture post-harvest chain and regional trade” has been achieved. This first phase of the programme was carried out in the Volta Basin, which served as a pilot beneficiary area, to inform similar interventions in other shared waterbodies.

    Small-scale fisheries play an important role in contributing to food security, nutrition, livelihoods and local and national economies. However, there is often limited data and information available (or not easily accessible) on their contributions, and hence small scale fisheries tend to be overlooked and marginalized in policy processes, leading to low levels of support for the sector. The Voluntary Guidelines for Securing Sustainable Small-Scale Fisheries in the Context of Food Security and P overty Eradication (the SSF Guidelines), adopted by the FAO Committee on Fisheries (COFI) in 2014, provide a policy framework for how to ensure sustainability for small-scale fisheries through a holistic and integrated approach. However, this transformational process needs substantial support to take place and be successful, which may be difficult to obtain in the absence of better data and information on the socio-economic contributions of small-scale fisheries. For this reason, a new study has been proposed by FAO and WorldFish to build upon the 2012 World Bank, FAO and WorldFish Center report Hidden Harvest: The Global Contribution of Capture Fisheries. The new study would deepen the knowledge and encourage data-sharing on small-scale fisheries and their socio-economic contributions, and also aim to make policy- and decision-makers aware of the sector’s importance.

    Knowledge of the status and trends of capture fisheries, including socio-economic aspects, is a key factor for sound policy development, better decision-making and responsible fisheries management. Capacity building in data collection and fisheries statistics has always been a high priority for FAO, regional fisheries bodies and national fisheries authorities. The most recent effort by FAO was the development of this toolkit for routine small scale fisheries data collection. The toolkit comprise s a generic database (OPEN ARTFISH) and a mobile phone application for routine small scale fisheries data collection. The primary objective of the toolkit is to facilitate the implementation of cost effective and sustainable routine data collection, storage and analyses of data, using appropriate statistical procedures.
