The workshop took place in Tashkent, Uzbekistan from 12 to 14 January 2010. The workshop was hosted by the Institute of Zoology of the Uzbek Academy of Sciences. The w orkshop was attended by 35 participants, representing Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkey, Uzbekistan, the FAO Fisheries and Aquaculture Department and the FAO Subregional Offi ce for Central Asia. The objectives of the workshop were three-fold: 1) To identify research, development, education and training needs of the Central Asian countries based on country overviews submitted for the workshop and the country replies to the questionnaire comprising a list of priorit y areas for research and training/ education; 2) To carry out a sector-wide regional assessment/synthesis and comparative analysis of the situation in fi sheries and aquaculture research, education and training with the aim of providing insights for relevant stakeholders; and 3) To draft inputs for a regional fi sheries and aquaculture research, education and training programme for the sector, to be carried out by FishDev-Central Asia and other programs and interested partners. The W orkshop recognized that the current institutional capacity in fi sheries and aquaculture research, development and training in the Central Asian region is not suffi cient to support a growth in fi shery production. Priority research and training/education needs were identifi ed based on country responses to a survey questionnaire. The analysis of the country responses to the survey indicated that the establishment of an institutional structure for improvement of education, training and r esearch in fi sheries and aquaculture can be achieved through collaboration at regional level, with clear and comprehensive long-tem targets that are formulated, implemented and monitored by the committed stakeholders. The workshop concluded with some recommendations for further actions towards improvement of national and regional capacity in fi sheries and aquaculture education, training and research. -

No results found. The need for developing suitable feeds based on locally available inexpensive ingredients has been widely recognized. Since lack of trained personnel is the main constraint in the development of fish feed technology in developing countries, the FAO/UNDP Aquaculture Development and Coordination Programme (ADCP) organized a special training course in fish feed technology at the College of Fisheries, University of Washington, Seattle, with a view to forming a small corps of fish feed specialists wh o could then be the focal points for future feed development programmes in their respective countries. The first report of the training course was presented in the report ADCP /REP/79/8. This present volume represents the edited texts of lectures presented by different specialists. Some additional material has been included for more complete coverage of the subject. Together, these texts may be considered to constitute a manual on fish feed technology, even though they were not prepared for that purpose. Twenty-six papers are included, under the general headings: (1) Digestion, physiology and anatomy; (2) nutritional bioenergetics; (3) nutritional biochemistry; (4) feedstuffs; (5) feed formulation; (6) feed manufacturing technology; (7) practical diets; and (8) quality control. Appendices include conversion tables, electrical data, and details on pelletability of selective feedstuffs, pellet die specifications, and equipment requirements for an 8 ton an hour feed mill. -

No results found. The International Symposium on Sustainable Animal Production and Health – Current Status and Way Forward, organized by the Animal Production and Health Section of the Joint FAO/IAEA Centre of Nuclear Techniques in Food and Agriculture, found its departing point in these challenges. Within the five days of discussions and debates, the Symposium comprised a panel discussion and eight thematic sessions: a) molecular tools for animal production and health, b) advances in vaccinology, c) emergency preparedness and response, d) zoonotic diseases, COVID-19 and ZODIAC, e) enhancing livestock’s contribution to One Health and the Sustainable Development Goals, f) challenges for better livestock production in the developing world; g) advances in biotechnologies for improving livestock breeding and feeding, h) application of improved technologies for sustainable livestock productivity: the way forward. The symposium, held virtually, was attended by more than 3000 participants and observers from more than 160 countries, as well as by representatives of international organizations including the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE). The more than 50 presentations were related to research and development actions for the sustainable improvement of animal production and health, emphasizing the role of nuclear technologies. These presentations were complemented by more than 145 synopses and posters from the participants, which were made available in a Book of Synopses. This publication is a compilation of the contributions emanating from the symposium. It encompasses the three opening speeches of the IAEA Director General, Mr. Rafael Mariano Grossi, the FAO Director General, Mr. Qu Dongyu, and the OIE Director General, Ms. Monique Eloit; and 47 papers from participants and speakers, which have been peer-reviewed by FAO and IAEA colleagues, independent outside experts and the Scientific Committee. The Book of Proceedings provides vital information and evidence on how nuclear and nuclear related techniques can contribute to the development of sustainable livestock production systems, as well as noting the constraints and opportunities for their use in developing countries. The book hopes to serve as guidance for scientists as well as government and institutional policy and decision makers.
