Book (stand-alone)Technical studyAquatic biodiversity in Rice-Based Ecosystems
Studies and reports from Indonesia, Lao PDR and the Philippines
2014Also available in:
No results found. This report contains the assessments of availability and use of aquatic organisms in rice ecosystems conducted in late 2013 in four sites in Indonesia (three in West Java and one in Bali), three sites in Xieng Khouang Province in Lao People’s Democratic Republic and four sites in three provinces on Luzon Island in the Philippines. A standard methodology was applied in conducting the assessments. The documentation was made of the animal and plant organisms found in the study sites and being colle cted by the people, the methods and tools to capture or gather them, and their uses as food, medicine and for other purposes. Local people have generally acknowledged a general decline in the abundance and diversity of the species. Factors included the intensification of rice cultivation accompanied by the use of chemical inputs, increasing exploitation driven by population increase and in some cases a high market demand for some species, and destructive fishing. Recommendations range from expan ding the study period to observe biodiversity changes during other seasons of the year, locally tailored management measures using the study sites as pilot areas, national policy that protect the ricefield ecosystem biodiversity and enhance their flow of services, extending the assessment to the value chain of the species which have an increasing market demand, to institutional arrangements and collaboration between national, regional and international agencies and organizations. Awareness raisi ng of the value of the products and services of ricefield ecosystems and capacity building for communities and government agencies for management of the ecosystem were strongly recommended. This was taken one step further in Lao PDR where a small pilot project was undertaken with the Department of Livestock and Fisheries, to develop improved methodologies for integrating work on the valuation of aquatic resources into local policy development processes. This included the development of local cap acity and demonstrated that a facilitated process of collaboration between local communities and local government agricultural extension officers, can successfully influence local policy and establish institutional mechanisms to sustain this work at both local and national levels. -
Book (stand-alone)Technical bookCulture of Fish in Rice Fields 2004Rice is presently grown in 113 countries. Rice farming also offers a suitable environment for the culture of fish and other aquatic organisms. This publication synthesizes the available information on the role that aquaculture can play in rice-based farming systems towards food security and poverty alleviation. The review describes the history behind integrating aquaculture with different rice ecosystems, the various production systems in operation such as concurrent, rotational and alternate, t he modifications needed to the fields in order to integrate fish with rice farming, and the agronomic and aquaculture management that is necessary. The benefits of integration to communities - economic and environmental - are also described with reviews of the experiences from various countries. The real impacts of rice-fish farming and its future potential in terms of improved income and nutrition are significant but generally underestimated and undervalued. Notable changes have taken place in pest management in rice farming, and in fish seed production and availability making this a particularly relevant moment for emphasizing the importance of rice-fish farming. There is considerable potential for rice-fish farming to expand further in many countries and to contribute substantially towards global food and nutritional security.

Book (series)Technical reportReport of the Regional Technical Workshop on Sustainable Marine Cage Aquaculture Development. Muscat, Sultanate of Oman, 25–26 January 2009 2009
Also available in:
No results found. The Regional Commission for Fisheries (RECOFI) Regional Technical Workshop on Sustainable Marine Cage Aquaculture Development, held from 25 to 26 January 2009 in Muscat, Sultanate of Oman, was organized in view of the growing importance and interest of this aquaculture sub-sector across the region. The workshop focus was on environmental impact assessment and monitoring, and aquaculture licensing for marine aquaculture cage systems and aimed at identifying constraints and shortcomings that requi red to be dealt with to support the development of the cage industry and facilitate investments from the private sector. The document contains a set of suggestions and recommendations with regards to technical and policy requirements needed to support the growth of the aquaculture sector as a whole and more specifically cage fish farming. The report also contains three review documents on marine cage aquaculture in the region, regulation of Norwegian net-cage fish farming, and a review on cage a quaculture licensing procedures prepared as background discussion papers for the workshop. With specific regard to environmental impact assessment (EIA) the discussions held at the workshop clearly indicate that there is a need for the region and individual Commission members to develop an ad hoc EIA format based on the conditions of the local marine environment. A proposed cage aquaculture licence procedure was discussed and proposed at the workshop based on the format developed and adopted by the Sultanate of Oman.

Book (stand-alone)General interest book地理标志食品的营养与健康潜力 2022
Also available in:
Book (stand-alone)Manual / guideThe Living Marine Resources of the Eastern Central Atlantic. Volume 2: Bivalves, gastropods, hagfishes, sharks, batoid fishes, and chimaeras 2016
Also available in:
No results found. This multivolume field guide covers the species of interest to fisheries of the major marine resource groups exploited in the Eastern Central Atlantic. The area of coverage includes FAO fishing area 34 and part of 47. The marine resource groups included are bivalves, gastropods, chitons, cephalopods, stomatopods, shrimps, lobsters, crabs, hagfishes, sharks, batoid fishes, chimaeras, bony fishes and sea turtles. The introductory chapter outlines the environmental, ecological, and biogeographical factors influencing the marine biota, and the basic components of the fisheries in the Eastern Central Atlantic. Within the field guide, the sections on the re source groups are arranged phylogenetically according to higher taxonomic levels such as class, order, and family. Each resource group is introduced by general re marks on the group, an illustrated section on technical terms and measurements, and a key or guide to orders or families. Each family generally has an account summarizing family diagnostic characters, bi o logical and fisheries in formation, notes on similar families occur ring in the area, a key to species, a check list of species, and a short list of relevant literature. Families that are less important to fisheries include an abbreviated family ac count and no de tailed species in formation. Species in the important families are treated in detail (arranged alphabetically by genus and species) and include the species name, frequent synonyms and names of similar speci es, an illustration, FAO common name(s), diagnostic characters, biology and fisheries in formation, notes on geo graphical distribution, and a distribution map. For less important species, abbreviated accounts are used. Generally, this includes the species name, FAO common name(s), an illustration, a distribution map, and notes on biology, fisheries, and distribution. Each volume concludes with its own index of scientific and common names. -
